Last question from me, after my cobra pump, 170? thermastat and electric fan was installed I noticed my truck NEVER got as hot as it use to on the stock gauge. My temp gauge would read just above midway stock.... now it barely ever gets out of the top of the little heat symbol.

Does this tell me the engine is receiving enough coolant flow?

Only time I have ever overheated was when my fan stopped working in traffic, but that was due to a crappy wire harness.

Thanks for all the insight!

Ask away
Rich, I've got an '03 Harley, on which I plan to install an Efan and the 'R' pump. My pump has this number on it: YR3Z8501AB. I won't race the truck, it will be an everyday driver. I live in Atlanta, which is hot & humid as hell in the summer. What do you think? Thanks for pitching in on this subject, it drives alot of us nuts!

By what Rich is telling us, there is no Cobra R Pump, just a Cobra Pump.

TampaBlack99, Your coolant temp is running approx 10 deg cooler because of the 170 T-stat. Not to worry about it at all.
BTW: Your not really gaining power from a 170

62Lincoln, Since your not intending on seeing high rpms very often, just leave the stock one in. The torque consumption differance does'nt really play a part til up around 4,000+ rpms.

The cobra pumps really should'nt be used for any reason other than to gain high rpm hp.

That's correct. There are only two *cobra* pumps that came from us/ford. The 96-98 versions w/8 straight blades. (which is the same as any other 4.6L e-fan motor). And the 99+ 7 bladed w/a shroud on top.

WHICH BTW: Is identical to the 7 bladed one in these later model Ls and HDs except at a smaller dia.

2nd only after another w/p project I did; This truck 7 bladed impeller is my pride and joy. I did about 35 iterations of this thing trying to balance all aspects of function, mfg, cost, & timing. Papa ford liked it so well they used it as a baseline for the 99+ cobra w/p PI program & was willing to spend well over 100Gs to make it happen. Getting someone to spend that kind of money takes proof. and I delivered.

There are just so many mathmaticaly things correct about it. All the DV (design validation) testing proved it too. I was able to flow 90% the same as the old 8 blade pictured here in this post, save about 30% in power consumption, and take care of a lot of other problems that I can't mention.

I was wondering what Rich's thoughts are on the lastest model Navi pump that is mentioned in Bad as L's (Dale) post #117 in this thread.

As you can see in the pics, the Navi pump has the short snout instead of that nasty long rusty shaft that's on the stock L pump. That's my main reason for going with the Cobra pump years ago.

Looks like a great option...Wonder how much $$ it is?

B. Rudman
Don't know him. He was'nt a WP engineer on the modular motors back in the late 80s early 90s when these were designed.
