Personally, I'd buy the Ford 4x4 deep tranny pan while changing the fluid. It's around $35 or so at your local dealer. The 4x4 tranny pan has a plug to make it easier next time. I'd either use Ford Motor company oil or either Royal Purple or Redline synthetic.

You know that you won't likely be able to change all of the fluid at home? You'll just get the 6 quarts or so in the pan. Even if you drain the tc, you'll still be a couple quarts short.

If you're interested in getting it all, go to someone that can flush it. It will take something like 17 quarts (check the owner's manual to be sure--it's been a while).

I replaced it with Mobile 1 ATF. Gregg says it runs cooler (if you're in a hot climate--didn't check).

You can search and find the part number or go to one of the sites that sells the FTVB and check there. BTW, I'd change to the FTVB while you're at it.

I just changed mine and I use mercon dextron III. I think that is the only one you are supposed to use. I bought brand Castrol.

I would definitely change the pan to the 4x4 for next time to save the mess. Get the pan then just punch a hole in the stock one so you don't make a mess. Throw the stock one out.

I would also get the FTVB and install it at the same time. Very simple if you are going to be taking off the pan. It is just 10 small bolts, pop out the old VB and pop in the FTVB. After the install I took 8 qts to fill it up(I did not flush it).
It is a pain the theazz job so you might as well do it all at once.

All 1999's and the early 2000's have a drain plug on the torque converter. I finally found mine when installing a FTVB several days ago. I didn't want to install the deeper pan because of clearance concerns, so I did it the MESSY way. It took 14 quarts of Mercon III to refill.

If you don't have a drain plug on the torque converter, get a flush job done. Otherwise you'll miss over half of the old ATF if you just drop the pan.
