Question Can a chip go BAD?

I have a single program Diablo chip (old style, not the new "black" chip).

It worked fine for a long time, until it was removed before I went in for head replacement (blown plug). When I put it back in, I did not disconnect the negative terminal, but the vehicle was not in the ACC or ON position. I only did this because at the time I wanted to drop it in and see what it felt like with a chip and no other mods.

I had read in a previous post that when Sal was tuning a guys truck, he popped the chip back in without disconnecting the battery - as Sal said it wasnt a big deal.

I've since tried pulling the negative, then pulling the chip and reinstalling. Tried reseating the chip a few times without the negative battery connected.

I know the chip isn't working, as the 1-2 shift on anything more than 50-75% throttle, I still get the torque reduction which is OFF on the chip....

Any ideas? Or is it a completely useless piece of silicon now?

Your chip should be fine. I would make sure it's seated correctly. Usually the truck won't start if the chip isn't correctly inserted or working properly.

See - that's what I thought as well... I checked and rechecked the blasted thing. I guess I'll remove the PCM tonite and clean the contacts again, then put it back in.

That's the only thing I havent tried.

I figured the truck wouldn't start if it wasn't in completely, but it starts and runs fine... just runs like there's no program on the chip

It's very easy to damage a chip. Static elctricity, voltage spike, not disconnecting the battery, etc. It's a computer chip, they do not like electricity.

Yea, could have been... but I've been working with mobo's, RAM, procs, and the likes for years, and never blipped one from static electricity.

Rob -

Flashed my PCM? I'll have to ask my tech to see if he did that when working on the truck. Dunno why that would goof things up if the chip wasn't even installed?

There is no reflash for 01's is there ?? What would they flash it to ?

I know that 99s can be flashed to cux2 but wasnt aware that any other others had upgrade paths...

Sixpipes had his 99 flashed by the dealer - the 99 chip wouldnt let the truck start... My 2000 chip did - that how we figured out it had been flashed....

Thanks for all the responses...

I'm gonna try to pull the PCM tonight (wife willing), and try it all over again.

I'll post results (again, wife willing )

You got your wife working on the truck....COOL

Just wondering, but why not send the chip back to your dealer to be checked, if your having all the problems? Hope it all works out for you
