Head and Cam Chain Removal

Hope all is well. I spit a plug about a month ago and am getting ready to pull my heads to install some inserts. Reading my Chiltons manual it says in step three for head removal: "Remove the timing chains from the engine.". I assume this means turning to a new chapter in the book and removing the timing gears, tensioners, and front cover. For those who have removed their heads, do I need to do this? I have done some engine work on some pushrods but never a modular. Right now the blower and I/C are off and I am getting ready to attack the exhaust manifolds. Any pearls of wisdom or experience are welcome. thanks. R/S Dennis

remove upper intake

go through wheel well to remove exhaust manifold (you do NOT have to disconnect the exhaust piping from the manifold it will just hang)

You will need to remove the timing chain cover. pic:

That is a pic of the cover itself.

Here is what it will look like after removing it:

What side popped a plug? i have more pics and can post em if i knew what side popped. also i can give more advice.

Thanks guys, IOU a steak and a beer. The plug that blew was on the passenger side, second from the back. Don't feel like looking at the book for a better description. After a lot of research and correspondance with fastener companies, I have decided to remove both heads and install time-serts in all plug holes. Why? because it's my truck and want to keep it. Besides, I am not confident that installing a heli-coil or insert without removing the heads is satisfactory.

Spanky, After removing the timing chain cover, did you remove the chain or just relieve chain tension and let it hang.?.

I just got through draining all the coolant and working on the driver's side exhaust. Some of the exhaust manifold studs are coming out with the nuts. RATS! I am actually thinking of removing the front end and radiator for more room. Crazy right?

Work will cease tonight. I only have two beers left and don't have 13mm deep socket. Time to get more tools for X-mas. Thanks. R/S Dennis
