Motor Life Questions....

Try to answer the following questions to see how you take care of your ride...

How Offen do you change your oil?

What Type of oil? (weight, regular, syn?)

How offen do you check/change your plugs?

How offen do you replace your fuel filter?

How offen do you change you tranny fluid and filter?

How offen do you change your rearend fluid?

The first four are key elements. I am very **** about Prevenative Maintenace. My father has been a Mechanic all his life and tought me to do more now and it will pay off later.

1- I changed my oil every two weeks no matter what
2- 5W-30 Penzoil NO SYN JUNK!
3- Every 5-7k miles
4- Every 7500 miles
5- Every 10,000 miles
6- Every 15,000 miles

Now this may be crazy to some of you, but burnouts and 1/4 mile passes ADD A TON of life to your drivetrain. I have done this to about every car I have owned and hardly ever had ANY major problems.

Cold weather is a BIT$$ to a power added motor, make sure you take the proper steps to save your motor!

1. 28,000 miles changed oil about 14 times w/ that CRAPPY Mobil 1
2. fith set of plugs
3. 6 th fuel filter
4. tranny fluid 5 times
5. rearend fluid 5 times

Never had a problem. 99% of the time I drive to the track and run a #, my best driving to the track was an 11.03 and then drove home.

I have posted this before. THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE.

A lot of guys race these Ls and still do regular maintenance. It will catch up to ya one day.

I just dont like Syn oil, every car I have used it in seems to have smoke or bearing problems after using it.

If the truck has had a lot of quartermile runs, then I would agree that a more frequent oil change can be beneficial during those times, but 2,000 miles on an oil change with synthetic oil (even with conventional oil under medium use) is way to often under more normal operating conditions. Changing the oil out at 2,000 miles isn't going to increase the life of your engine compared to a more conservative maintenance program. Same goes for the tranny fluid and rear end fluid. Those fluids are capable of going much longer. Modern day oils have the capabilities of going much longer without any effects. Oil analysis has proven this out many times over. Oil related failures are very rare. I know a lot of members have said it gives them a warm fuzzy feeling knowing that their truck has fresh oil, but the truck wouldn't know the difference and would perform just fine and last just as long with a more consevative program. If the warm fuzzy feeling makes you feel better, then go for it, but rest assured it's not necessary. Seeing as how I'm in the oil distribution business, I thank you guys for using that much oil though.

I agree in some ways, but I use to run 2-3 days a week 5-10 runs a day so I know the oil needed it. I wouldnt say a daily driven truck needs it done every two weeks, but I would say a daily driven truck should change it before it hits the track. Oil test have shown various things, but to me when that oil has changed colors, heat has goten to it.

My toys and my familys toys daily driven or not keeps clean oil! lol your sales just went up!

One comment I will make, and that's in regards to color. The change of color doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the condition of the oil or amount of heat the oil has been subjected to. Oil is made up of detergents and dispersants that clean the engine and encapsulate the particles safely in the oil to prevent them form doing any damage. If an oil isn't changing color, you have to wonder how well it's cleaning the engine.

How Offen do you change your oil? = first oil change @ 1000miles, then 3k after that w/Mobil1 0W-30 in the fall/winter and 0W-20 spring/summer. I also change it before and after a weekend of racing

How offen do you check/change your plugs? = Change them before a weekend of racing and check them after a weekend of racing

How offen do you replace your fuel filter?= Everytime I change the oil

How offen do you change you tranny fluid and filter? = Fluch entire trans with machine every other oil change, filter change every 12k.

How offen do you change your rearend fluid?= every 3 months.

Synthetic oil is the only way to go, it is used in all high performance applications and their is no substitute, but dont break in a motor or trans on it, break it in with conventional motor oil then switch over.

Just curious why you would use a heavier viscosity in winter than you do in spring and summer?

Man and I thought I was ****. I am an abuser compared to some of you. I drive my truck a little hard (at least one wot session per day) but that is why I use Mobil One and change it every 3k miles.
There is absolutely no way ICULOKN is doing any preventative maintenance with oil changes every two weeks. IMO, that's a little ridiculous but...that's his truck and that's what he wants to do. I think Mobil One could go much further than 3k miles but I don't let it. As for all of the other things, I'll just follow Ford's recommended change intervals. Just my 2 cents.
