Didn't know the battery backup issue.

But how's this....

Depending on what you want to use the PC for, don't use Windows. Use PocketPC (WinCE) OS. It is instant on/off when used with the flash on the mobo.

It's not as feature rich, but you could do most of the entertainment things you want to do and incorporate the touch screen.

battery backups done work with squarewave current! so you cant use one as long as u are using an inverter...and if you plan on adding such things as printers, wireless lans, usb hubs, etc, it makes it much more convenient to have an inverter available...btw i'll be back in a few hours to check how the class is doing..
No need to be a condescending smart@ss... You know the answer just like I do - get an inverter that produces a pure sine wave. They aren't even that much more expensive.

damn, i couldnt find a sine wave power supply to save my a$$ last year...i even got belkin and some other electronic folks involved and non one seemed to know anything about sine wave inverters...told me they didnt exist...ok then i guess that would be a solution that would allow the use of a battery backup and the software that closes the os...cool!

In high end and competition car audio systems that require being plugged in to a socket, that's what we use....and was referring to in my prior posts

I'm a little confused why you would want to drive an AutoPC computer from an invertor unless you were trying to limit yourself to off the shelf design components?

Regular computer motherboards run off of DC power, needing a few different +/- 3, 5 and 12V feeds.

Things like the "MPBS1" ATX power supply or "E312" Mini-ITX power supply would be perfect and designed for cars.

Or even, just getting a 12v to 24v DC convertor to stablized the battery line feed and use a telco PC power supplies.

the inverter comes in handy for all the other 120 volt things u might want to use...i.e. printers etc
