I'll take a stab at it...

Just use the power save function in windows triggered by a relayed ignition pulse. This would allow you to have the system go into standby mode when the vehicle is turned off saving all your current session information. Once triggered again by turning the car on, the system would turn back on with all the prior information still active.

Most PC's and laptops have this function available in the later versions of windows.

Correct, but that's not an issue. All stereo's have constant power going to them inorder to retain the clock and preselects.
The same thing applies to the cpu power source. Just wire the power inverter to not shut off with ignition. The draw is so minor that it wont effect the vehicle.

BTW, I'm a former installer

i actually used an inverter so that all the other peripherials would be able to be used without disecting them...so the problem in my case would be keeping the inverter on all the time...the draw is more than minor at that point...

oh and something else, the power surge caused by the starter kills most computers...how would you handle that?

Here's a stab at it...

Why not a rechargable battery backup for the PC connected to the inverter, ala a laptop? Then it can sleep whenever the power is cut.

battery backups dont work with square wave current, which is what inverters put out...see, its tricky!

Simply add a battery backup/surge protector. I'm not seeing the problem here with a daily driven vehicle that is started at least once a day.

...and yes they will function in a car. My shop has used them several times.

battery backups done work with squarewave current! so you cant use one as long as u are using an inverter...and if you plan on adding such things as printers, wireless lans, usb hubs, etc, it makes it much more convenient to have an inverter available...btw i'll be back in a few hours to check how the class is doing..
