Mobil 1 Oil ?

did a search and saw some say yes, some say no... some say that purple stuff....

just curious, is mobil 1 synthetic oil okay? i plan on changing oil this weekend and wanted to know... if so, which kind is the best? i saw some mobil 1 that is specially for race cars... it has a red label.... ??? also, how many quarts do I need to fill it up?

ohhhh, and one more thing... i heard something bad about those fram filters... someone said they are nothing but cardboard.... is there a better one to get like k&n or something?

Mobil 1 is fine. The cheap stuff is fine too as long as you change your oil regularly.

Synthetic Mobil 1 has a great reputation, I wouldn't have any concern about using it.

Fram has a pretty bad reputation. I'd go with the Motorcraft filter.

ok, is there really an advantage to using mobil 1 over a regular oil as long as they are both changed every 3k miles?

Mobil1 for the money is the best you can put in it. I'm sure others will chime in with Amsoil/Redline/Royal Purple claiming they're the best etc... I've used amsoil for awhile, but I'm switching back to mobil1 because it's slightly cheaper, and the performance diff between the 2 is so narrow it's not even worth arguing about really. I also have friends that use RP in their trucks and they are happy with it. Either Mobil1 0w-20 or 5w-30 is what you want for your L, and 6 qt's of it.

Yes fram filters are garbage. The best I've heard of is mobil1 filter (k&n is allegedly real good too). However if you change your oil every 3000 like most people, the ford fl-820s would be the way to go, and much cheaper.

As for my 03L, I use mobil1 5w-30 with a ford filter, and change every 2500-3000 miles.

It doesn't break down anywhere near as fast as conventional dino oil. And the odds are your truck (not knowing what year it is) came from the factory with synth oil in it.

Amsoil 0W-30 or 20W-50 "Severe Service" Racing oil would work. Check out the web page.

No. Study after study has been done on this, and there is no proof of any difference if the oil is changed regularly.

Our trucks do not come with synthetic oil. Synthetic oil will not allow our engines to breakin properly as "dino oil" does.

If you have an 03, it came with synthetic oil (check your manual). Not sure on any previous years (thought 02 did but could be wrong).

Also the break-in statement is incorrect. If that were true not a single car would have synthetic from the factory in it, yet vettes, vipers, porsches etc... all have it and they break in just fine.

A friend of mine who is an engineer for Ford told me this. I will call him in a few minutes and verify. I do know that when I talked to him before that he mentioned there are additives put into the motors to help them break in properly, and not to change the oil too quickly. I'll buzz him in a few.

Ok, heres the explaination I got. It is synthetic with organic additives to allow the rings to seat properly. His caveat is that he does not work on powertrains, but is aware of what goes on with them. He mentioned that just about every vehicle that comes with "synthetic oil" is actually a synthetic blend of sorts that can be changed to purely synthetic at the first change.

We were both right I guess. I learned something today.

I use Mobil one. I've used Amsoil in the past and it is great. However, Mobil is quicker and easier for me to get and it is also cheaper. I use the K/N oil filters as well. I drain/change mine about every 7500 Kms.
