Some details on the 3rd Gen...

Link to story...

Ford has assembled a prototype next-generation Lightning and, like the current model which is based on the previous-generation F-150’s PN96 platform, it’s powered by a supercharged 5.4L Triton V-8. Differences include improved output – 500 hp compared with the ’04-model’s 380 hp – and an F1-style, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifter for the truck’s automatic transmission

The concept Lightning vehicle has been out for some time. We'll have to wait and see what actually goes into production though. Once the bean counters get ahold of it, who knows what it will end up with.

Like I posted elsewhere.

I'm all about F1 paddles on the Gen 3.
Screw the Manual!

Now if we can talk them into AWD, we'd be set

"I can shed some light on this. There will not be a F-150 S/C Harley truck in the new body prior to the release of the 3rd gen "L." The F-250 will be the next gen harley truck.

No paddle shifter for the new L. Ford is trying to keep the cost of the new L around $35K-$37K. We will not see the super cooler in the next L. The performance numbers on the SRT RAM are not enough for SVT to go all out. It would add additional cost to the truck, SVT's budget for durability testing and a risk for high warranty repair.

SVT's intentions are to advertise the gen 3 L as the dominant sport truck, a SRT RAM killer, and out performs the competition for $10k less. That is going to be Coletti's slogan.

We will not get a GT engine in the next gen L. They are going to pick and choose certain parts to incorporate into the next L 5.4L engine. It will be a wet sump and the truck will take on additional 300lbs. That is why it will also need 450+hp to move it's tailgate down the track. "

Just judging by Fords past efforts, and general good business practices, the new L will have the majority of it's drivetrain from other trucks. My guess is on 3-valve heads, but I don't think this by itself will give enough hp. Without some revisions, the Eaton is out of it's league after 400 hp. The KB is much more expensive, but it's torque curve will work much better with variable valve timing and 2 intake valves. Maybe there will be a cheaper OEM twin-screw?

Also, I really don't see a manual tranny in the cards...2 reasons. First, they don't have a performance tranny that will stand up to 500 lb/ft and 5000lbs. Second, a auto will be much easier on driveline parts, especially the IRS.
I believe what Thor01 said; Thus, we'll likely be stuck with the garden variety auto and torque reduction electronics.

A larger roots type blower could also be a possibility.

This past week went to the post office...got my stamps and left...
there was a middle age guy admiring the Bolt...he started up a conversation...fine guy...he works at the Eaton plant here in Athens....I believe they are working on a blower called the "TERMINATOR" (I could be mistaken here though)...I may be able to get some "SPOOK" info if you guys are interested...some years ago my past 2000 L was on display on their front lawn at the Eaton Plant.

Hey guy's. Try a eaton screw-type, same configuration as the GT. Ford isn't going to spend all that R&D money for that S/C to go on one engine...lol

Maybe the same s/c for the next 2006 Cobra...

It will probably be the same twin screw that is on the GT.

That would make sense... Would get the power rating to what the new L would need to be.

at lightningfest, we took a tour of the local ford plant.. they don't make lightnings there, but the tour guide took the trouble to find out about the next gen lightning to give us some info..

we saw the 04 F150 frames (same thing they will use on the 05 L)
it is HEAVY!! fully boxed, and no more frame "grease" coating.
it has a thick paint like covering.

he told us about SVT & Ford were trying to make up their mind on what level of trim.

he asked us if we would pay more for bigger rims, bucket seats, higher HP engine, nicer stereo, ect...

told us that it most likely wouldn't be a manual transmission. (heck, the 05 prototype at lightning fest was late because they had to put a new clutch in it.)

he said svt and ford wanted to know what we wanted..

(i've drank a little since then, so my story may be a little skewed) LOL
