Badges

Just a friendly pointer. I acetoned my badges using brake cleaner…no problem there, until I had to go in to help my daughter with a school project. I must have left the fluid on the paint just a little too long. It raised the paint just under my right side badge. I was able to compound and buff out the raised clear coat, but hey if it helps anyone avoid any unnecessary work my pain is your gain. I have had no other problems with using the brake cleaner…just don’t leave it on the paint any longer than you have to.

yeah brake cleaner and nail polish i think it is work much easier than acetone. Acetone will damage paint like mad so you have to tape it off very carefully, which isnt eassy with that particular badge. Brake cleaner on the other hand, isn't good for paint, as 00redLrod found out, but its much less so than acetone. Just tape it off good, spray, clean, and then wipe the whole area down good and get it clean so theres nothing left. But it is strange, brakecleen is supposed to be completely non residueing and evaporates fast as hell.

yeah, but that may only apply when the surface is a non painted metal. I wouldnt think its strong enough to take off the badges black paint...the acetone worked well but I still had to use a ton of q-tips to get it all off. I did tape off the area first though, which took about 20 mins to do by itself.

yeah i haven't tried it but supposidly with brake cleaner there is no need for q tips, it just all runs off. Which makes sense actually, if you had acetone in an aerosol can you could probably do it really easily since you can kinda hose the black stuff off. Either way taping it off is a must.

lol, brakeclean is good stuff, it does a GREAT job of removing stains from interior fabric.

I've been told is a VERY similar product as what they use at drycleaners.

one word of caution, it WILL eat plastic if you leave it on for long.

I had a helper one time do an oil change on a windstar and the crappy oil drain spout can dripped some oil on the front bumper and headlight of a windstar.

he sprayed a little brakeclean on the oil and started wipeing with a rag. well, the oil came off, but unfortunately the brakeclean melted the plastic headlight and turned it all dull and left rag lint permanently melted into the lense

so needless to say, the customer got some new lenses.

oh well, you live and learn.

later,
chris
