FTVB concern

After reading people ranting and raving about this mod time and time again, I decided I should have one too. Well I installed it this weekend and to be honest I can't tell much of a difference over the stock shifts. The 1-2 and 3-4 seem no different, and the 2-3 is a little harder but thats it. My truck is very lightly modded with no chip. Is this a mod that you need a chip to get any benefit from? I thought I have read on here about people using the FTVB with no chip and being quite satisfied. Did I do something wrong? Seemed like a pretty easy install, not much oppurtuniuty to mess up, but maybe I did. Anybody have any advice, or were my expectations to high and this is is good as it gets?

Mine is the same way, kind of soft. I do have the pressure turned up in my chip now, so it is a little harder shifting. One of the main benifits is that your tranny will shift quicker, maybe not a lot harder, and last longer.

You should notice the shifts are quicker, but if you don't have a chip the torque reduction is still turned on. Four of your injectors are cut off during shifts to reduce torque on the tranny. I'd recommend a chip if you would like harder shifts and/or your tires to spin during shifts.

I installed mine I thought I would get a concussion when it shifted!

1-2 always does a HARD shift.
2-3 always chirps!

Are you using larger tires?
I noticed that people using 18" and larger notice it doesn't shift that hard.

My 18" melt on shift

I have the stock 18 inch wheels. Do I hve to be WOT to notice a big difference, or should normal driving be affected too? Also is there somethign I could have done wrong while installing?

normal driving it shifts like a raped ape!

Did you add the deep trans pan? and added the extra fluid that it holds.

I can speculate, But Gregg Evans, can tell you EXACTLY what the problem is, IF there is a problem

Yes I added the deep pan, and I have put in 8 quarts of fluid so far. According to the dipstick it is just right.

On my bone stock L, I love the way the FTVB shifts. Not a radical change, but a clear change nonetheless.

The most noticeable change for me, though, is a negative. On casual 1-2 upshifts (like in stop-and-go SoCal traffic), it can be jarring. Against Gregg's advice, I usually leave it in "2" for stop-and-go.

As mentioned above, with torque reduction enabled (as, according to Gregg himself, it should be left alone on the chip burn), the shifts can only hit so hard.

But why would you want them to hit harder? Quicker shifts = slightly WOT more acceleration. Harder shifts = ?

Well, if you ever have a problem with one of the accumulators, send your address to me and I'll replace it, no questions asked. I don't care if you bought it used on E-bay, it's got my name on it and I'll replace it. If you want it to shift harder on a paticular shift, let me know, i can tune them however you want. Differetn trucks can react very differently to them, so someone with the same mods may feel different than your's, it happens, but we can fix it. Just tell me "to soft on the 1-2, 2-3 is fine, and 3-4 is a little mushy" or whatever, and I'll make it how you ask. It's bbest to e-mail me at GBEvans@peoplepc.com, I work nights and it's about impossible to contact me any other way.
