rear end clunk???
I need some help guys...
went out driving last night, and almost everytime i hit a bump, there was a clunking sound coming from the rear end, it seemed mostly on the drivers side. ive done the research on the clunk in the front, so im not thinking its the same thing since it happens while going straight, and hitting bumps, not going slow and turning. anyone have any ideas on this? thanks in advance...

well it doesn't sound like it is INSIDE the rear end housing, usually that makes noises around turns.
it sounds suspension related
Or make sure that your spare tire is mounted tightly!@.
Have you lowered the rear? or done any mods to the rear suspension?
If it has high mileage, check to see if the shock is leaking. might be a bad shock.
(I'm assumming you don't have anything in the bed of your truck bounding around)

i have the JLP drop shackles, thats all ive done to the rear end, ill check the spare tire in a minute, hopefully thats it! i went driving a minute ago again to try and isolate the problem...ive now got it down to accelerating and hitting a bump. and its definately from the drivers side rear. if i hit bumps while cruising its not there, but if im on the gas and hit a bump, then it comes????
ive only got 2000 miles on it. nothing in the bed (id really fell retarded if that was it!)

wasnt there another post on this a week or 2 ago...IIRC, someone had a video of themselves at the track and could hear the "clunk" at takeoff....I think it had something to do with axle wind up. I dont know if this is the same problem, but it may have something to do with your problem.
denny 0328, I have an 2004 f-150 xlt 4x2 super-cab. Ever time I hit a bump there is a linking sound coming from driver side rear of truck. I have read many others with the same problem and with no reason what it is. Any impute would be highly appreciated. I removed tire and one of my break pads fell out, removed caliper and roter, both e- brake pads fell out. Did not see any sign of blown seal but I could wiggle wheel hub up and down... So I think my bearings are shot and allow hub to move up and down at bumps. This in turn allows roter to clunk and is the cause of my thrashed brake pads??? I could really use some help here guy's. Is it possible to grind out the outer wheel bearings and not have fluid leaks?
Trending Topics
yes it is possible that the bearings went out and it is possible for there not to be any leaks if you dont have enough fluid in the housing and not having enough fluid could cause a bearing or two to go bad
Here is a thread I have had going on a similar issue, see if its the same as yours:

OK, I've replaced the rear outer bearings, seals, rotors, parking brakes, shocks, upper & lower ball joints, front struts. Still this damn clunk !!! Ford guy said he though it to be the pinion gear. I never hull stuff but carry construction tools in bed of truck. Still I believe it to be with in the weight limit. I also hear a friction sound when I excelerate. What the hell is that noise? Drive shaft? Could be related to clunk? Every thing looked good inside rear end when I opened it up, there was a lot of metal particles, but no buildup. I'm at a loss. What next to solve the infamous CLUNK??? This sound only happens when I go over bumps not at any other time. It sounds like it is from the rear drivers side. roll over a hole or bump and it sounds like the clunk--- clunk,or a sort of heavy rattle thank for any input / solutions.

check the shackles. I had one loosen up on me once, made some nasty noises going over bumps. Loosen em up, spray some kinda lube down in there (wd-40 is NOT lube) and tighten back up to specs. Might help ?
Mercedes Tech... Thank you for your reply!
I went outside this morning to retrieve some tools from the bed of my truck. I put the tailgate down and crawled in. The bottom of my truck was all covered in ice from driving yesterday. When I put weight on the tail gate I could clearly here a creak followed by the clunk. I have seen a previous post that said to check the shackles. This is adsactly the culprit of the clunk. How much do I tighten them? Will the bolts brake? Will they need replaced? I do not have access to this info. Does any one have a thread of step, by step procedure for tightening " torque specs" or replacement? 2004 f-150 suppercab xlt 4.6L V8 145" WB styleside; Thanks for any info and happy new years to all.

I wouldn't worry about torqueing to specs as much, but it does need to tighten. I use nylon lock nuts on just about every part on all my rigs, helps keeps the nut from walking out a bit on me. You can get them at your local hardware store. They have a small peice of nylon at the end of the threads. You can use any kind of lock nut, those are just what I prefer. While your at it, you can also upgrade to all grade 8 or better hardware if you want, but this is far from necessary. Some people like overkill ( like me ! ).
Use some spray on lube, spray it all over the area. Work the suspension a bit (jump in the bed, rock it around, whatever ya like). Take off factory bolts, put on new bolts. Tighten up real snug (tight). Don't need to be incredible hulk and tighten the crap outta them, but they should be nice and tight. Spray some more lube in the area. Should be good to go. I prefer a good name brand lube with silicone in it. Will help protect parts some, and builds up a good film to keep things lubed up.

rearend clunk
the continuing mystery: OK, I'm getting close to finding out where the clunk is coming from. At work today I sat on my tail gate and a friend crawled under the truck. I was pushing up and down on the tail gate and the noise seems to be the leafs clunking together. HOW do I fix that? Are there replacement shims? I do not see how lube. will fix this! Is there some thing that could have fallen out? It sounds like the rear end is going to rattle completely apart. My plan is to jack up and support the frame leaving the tires on the ground. Release U bolts. I would think the leafs should separate a little? lube and jam some rubber or some thing in there. Please help; THANKS
