Wink EGR Blockoff - Easy HOW-TO...

When I had all the parts off the upper plenum, I decided to try a little trick that has worked in the past for my days with the Eclipse turbo...

This in NO WAY is an admission of guilt, or that I actually have this installed on my vehicle. I believe in abiding by all applicable CARB and emission laws, and do not condone this sort of behavior on daily driven vehicles...

...now with THAT said

I was tired of my upper plenum getting hotter than he// from the exhaust gases, and figure it'll only hurt my emissions (and as easterisland has said, a few small children).

Here's the tools I used to make the blockoff (the BEST use for a used license plate):

I cut out a circular piece a little bigger than the opening of the hard steel tube that comes up from the drivers side manifold.

I placed it in-between said tube and the EGR valve, then tightened down that huge nut that holds the pieces together. (sorry, forgot to snap a pic of it)

I figure it'll at least keep the temps down on the plenum until I can install a phenolic spacer. And I put the "plate" at the location I did to cutoff the heat before the upper plenum.

Don't have any 'real world' results yet, as my truck is sitting in long term parking for the week...will check it out Friday when I get home....

just get rid of the EGR tube all together. Then you get even less heat transfer!

this was a prototype, since then I've made a nice polished piece.

Joe I like your set up, where did you get the black part at to block the wholes on the plenum where the screws were? and what did you use to put in the whole down by your header where the egr started? Thanks, Shane

just went on a 20min drive. no check engine lights came on.
truck ran like a beast, but it could be because tonight was the first time it saw 67 degrees in a long time.
i pulled over and felt the plenum and the egr thing and they were both cool to the touch, while the egr tube from the header was hot.
Rock on maxpower it worked !!!!!

I dont know if this will result in any power gains at all. The egr function actually lowers combustion chamber temps when functioning. Now your temps will go up w/o egr and could very well cause detonation as a result. Not saying 'it will' but ' it might.'

Also, I did this trick on a different vehicle and it worked-for awhile,,, eventually my tin block off plate was blow-torched thru Check yours in a few 100-1000 miles. Most egr block off plates are fairly thick steel for this reason. If this mod has no ill side effects, Id try it on my L.

I would definetly like to know how this experiment holds up. I am also wanting to get rid of the EGR but don't have any hard proof of what ill-effects, if any, it may cause.

I make my own EGR blockoff plates out of 1/4 inch T56 aluminum. No problem...I also use stainless header bolts on the plate. On the header side I use a thick brass plug.

The whole point of the EGR is for emissions. EGR stand for "Exhaust Gas Recirculation." Basically it sends exhaust gasses into your intake manifold. What this does it reduce the amount of unburned fuel that exits the engine(plus a few other things such as lower combustion temps). The ill side effect according to some people is that the intake plenum is heated due to the exhaust gases being so hot. So, the point of blocking off the EGR is basically to reduce the temperature of the upper intake plenum by stopping to hot exhaust gases from entering it. I think.

BTW,
promod, what type of intake setup is that on your truck??

I believe it will throw a code. Thought I read that somewhere.

Man RTKILLA and promod - the engine bay SURE does look a LOT cleaner without all that EGR jazz cluttering it up!

This board is always right in line with my thoughts.

I was installing my Linelock kit last week and was thinking about removing the EGR tube and hardware.

The upper blockoff is not a problem, I have done that one nearly every vehicle I have owned. But the problem is finding the right thing for the bottom where the EGR tube goes into the header.

What do I need to block this off correctly (meaning not destroying the tube) a simple plug? what size?

My Z28 I just had the header welded up where the tube went, but I dont want to do that to the Lightning. I want something that I can return back to stock very easily.
