Silverado SS is a joke
Silverado SS is a joke
I've been checking out the site www.silveradoss.com for the last few weeks to see what kinda times new owners were putting down at the strip. Well a member in MN recently ran the fastest 'stock' time of 14.986 @89.21mph
In a separate thread on the SS vs Hemi, some guy who owns a '94 Lightning broke it down for their dumb #sses saying:
"All this SS vs. Hemi talk is just a tempest in a teapot. My 1994 practically-stock Lightning smoked BOTH of them last month at Moroso Motorsports Park in Palm Beach.
It ran 14.93 to the SS' 15.85 and the HEMI's dreadful 16.21. It's the TORQUE that does the talkin' guys. I have only 245 HP (perhaps 270 or 280 if you believe the conspiratorialists.... but GOBS of torque. The HEMI makes decent torque numbers, but way up in the RPM range. My L makes it in the 2 grand range... combine that with 4.10 gears and I can smoke any SSS or HEMI I meet.
Read it and weep.

Needless to say, no one liked these comments at all!
Gen 1 or 2, ALL LIGHTNINGS ROCK!!!!

1/8 mile is 9.689 at 72.63 not to bad for a 5700 pound truck.

Hey, I have nothing against Chevy's. I'm actually looking to trade-in my L in a year or so for an '02/'03 Z06 in Electron Blue or Torch red!
Chevy, in this case, is just selling wine before its time. The SS's 345hp engine is strong, but surely they could have found something more potent - especially when the 3100 lb Z06 is running around with a 405hp/ 400 ft-lb monster under its hood. Now the AWD is great for rainy/snowy days, but that can't justify buying a 38K+ truck in my book - surely economies of scale should have allowed them to sell it for a more competitive price. Heck, the SS doesn't even come with a rear anti-roll bar, and Car and Driver got a skidpad rating of just 0.73g's. A V-6 Altima with a 5spd manual could out accelerate, out brake and out corner this truck! If I was spending that much money on a truck, the S/C HD is a much better deal in my book!
I know I'm not the only one that feels this way - the reviews by Car and Driver and Edmunds had the road tests editors all feeling that Chevy missed the mark on this one. If you market something as a performance product, you gotta deliver on that. Otherwise, stick the thing in the 'relaxed sportiness' category as Ford did with the 2002 Thunderbird.

You mean Crapter? The early modles had the Banshee gearing in them and the bottem ends what crumble under the torque. I'm a FMX'er (Freestlye Motocrosser) I ride a 03, CR-250. They did change the gears in the newer ones though.

Bill did you get rid of your bronco or whatever you had?
I think 15.1 might be a bit too fast for my 98 concorde spraying :P
we'll hav eot hit the track some time with our non lightning car!
I think I'll need to juice my ride with a75shot tho to keep up

15.1's out of a 5700 pound luxury pickup isn't to bad. I have a good time with it, and it pulls the Lightning with no problems and has the same turning radius as a Saturn coupe.

Here it is cold and hard.
chevy deserves EVERY bit of critisism for marketing that truck as a performnace vehicle period.Ya Ya Ya its a nice truck,Nobody is arguing that but it doesnt deserve the SS name and thats it period.
it is nor a sport truck
It is not fast
It does not handle
its an extended cab
its really nothing special and its over priced.
what is is
expensive
semi luxurious
AWD
slow
good looking
Heres what it boils down too.It is a 4wd truck that you cannot plow with or haul hevy loads. You can buy a 4wd chevy right now at my local garage for $24k and spend another 4K GENEROUSLY in wheels ,and bumpercovers, paintwork and such. You could drive it in the summer and then plow ith it in the winter.
I think the SS is a Fu%#in ORPHAN and it doesnt really have a place in the auto industry
The HD is at least faster, more room, sportier and less expesive.
Now if they made a reg cab that looked just like it in 2WD and it was as fast as a lightning,I would buy one tomorrow.I would chrome the wheels and be different for a little while.Ive had a lightning since 99 and need a change.I will never get rid of my lightning but i would like something else to drive.

Think "SSR" same thing
I agree but at least the SSR has a totally different styling cue making it different from anything else.
Why is GM so scared of making a real sport truck?????They are so damn stupid. They gotta realize that 1 out of every 2 chevy shortbeds with the 5.3 is being lowered with a set of wheels!!The LEAST they could have done is come out with the reg cab truck first! IDIOTS
On top of that,They had no problem selling the old 454 SS for $22k back in 1990 which was $4-5K more than a regular shorty. Those trucks still are desirable and they were great bullit proof trucks.
They had the BEST automatic tranny ever put in a 1/2 ton truck.
got 2nd gear rubber EVERY TIME
nice 8" wide wheels
nice tires
good paint scheme
buckets.
they were alot of fun back in the day!!
If you manage to find a white 92,its worth sticker still with super low mileage.

I've always been a Chevy Ford and Mopar Fan (in that order)
But the fact here is both Chevy + Dodge came out with these
SS + Hemi Trucks
to compete in The "Sport Truck" / "Performance Truck" Segmant,
JUST LIKE FORD DID AND CONTINUES TO DO,
IMO they both did it wrong, terribaly wrong, especially
when Chevy already has the Motors to truly power the
SS to a Performance Level near or about the L's.
Now Dodge, they truly screwed up, IMO the Hemi is
nothing but one of the biggest insults I've ever seen come
out of Detroit Engineering. Call it the Hemi II, call it Mini ME,
call it what ever the hell you want, BUT DO NOT CALL IT A HEMI,
and then have the ***** to show commercials of it beating a 60 style REAL HEMI Dragsters, while in the real world it has an ET worse than 4cyl's ricers at 1/2 the price.
S/S and HEMI USE TO MEAN "King of the Road"
BUT NOT NO MORE
Don't get me wrong, beautiful TRUCKS
I happen to love the look of the S/S, would love to have one
AS A TRUCK, Because thats what it is --> A TRUCK,
but Performance Vehicles they're clearly NOT
Unfortunatly they do market them BOTH that way
AS for Dodge, if your into having enough wheel well space to
build a studio apartment in, I guess to each there own
