Silverado SS is a joke
hello i know this is off topic but i wonder who would win a camaro ss or a L the reason im wondering is there is a C ss that lives next to me always reving it up and crap and i was just wondering if my L which is stock could out run this stock C ssim not sure what year it is but i know its the gen that is out right now it might be a 2000 or up thanks a lot....chris
Chris,
a stock 2000 MY Camaro SS comes with 325hp (owner can select even more hp enhancing goodies from SLP when ordering) and most mags that tested them returned times in the mid to low 13's at 103-105mph.
Not sure what model year your L is, but regardless, the two vehicles would be pretty evenly matched. The SS may have a slight edge, especially if you race longer than a 1/4 mile.

I pulled up next to a black SS today...a younger guy with Virginia tags. They are rather portly. Looks nice none the less...
I told him it was a nice truck and I meant it. He said it had a 6 liter engine...He asked how I liked the Lightning...I poked it..I couln't resist. Smoked the tires thru first and second...got off it...Him and his buddy were grinning ear to ear...They liked it...maybe almost as much as I do...
He said he was truning to many gears to get any smoke......it looks nice...

Friend had a 99SS with cam, headers and chip and it would outrun a Stock L. We never ran against a moded L.
Friend has a V6 camero with a Turbo on it, With a stock L From a 20mph roll the V6 camero will have about 1/2-1 car length on the truck at 90mph.
Ford needs to make more HP out of the motor and then throw on an SC.

Hey, I'm enjoying my SS. It's no Lightning, don't get me wrong. But it will hold my family of four, and I can drive it year round (southern Ontario gets a little snowy) Suits my needs very well.
GM didn't work the suspension very well. This thing is very bouncy. And their electronic throttle absolutely bites. But , then again, every manufacturer has their faults. That's why I don't own an L anymore.

Like I said before, Beautiful Truck

As far as I know, Chevy didn't stoop to the level of Dodge
and make a commercial showing it beating a Dragster either.
For a 4D Full Size Truck --> it's Beautiful and I'm sure peppier than most trucks in it's class.
Best of Luck with it, I truly like that Truck, just wish they
called it something differant than SS.
I guess being a Chevelle SS nut 1/2 my life and owning a dozen or so, has me partial on labling ""anything other than 2 Door Car's"" S/S's

Beautiful truck WHAT04,
Very nice indeed.
I know some of you guys are hung up on the SS badging, but come on they have been putting the SS badges on some really lame cars over the years, and the Silverado makes quick work of a lot of them.
345 h.p from a naturally aspirated motor isn't too bad. A little computer tuning and they are well into the 14's. Not bad in my book for a four door truck that can seat five.
I get 15.1's out of my Denali pickup, it's heavier than the SS and less power. All I have is an cold air intake a reprogrammed computer and a couple of little free mods. Not to Bad in my opinion.
And you never know when you might see a 700 plus h.p twin turbo Lingenfelter version that might surprise you.
You don't have to like everything but if the owner does, than that is all that is important. A true automobile enthusiast can appreciate all makes and models, Even if there isn't a blue oval on it.

Oh, and watch out for this one. haha

I was at the dstrip friday night . . . a guy was there with a ss . . . after watching him make a pass (15.9 against a hemi dreadful 16.2 I went back out to the lot and took my stock '99 Expy through tech inpection and lined up against a dakota r/t (It's what happend to be lined up next to me) . . . the dakota ran 15.8 vs my 15.9 @84 mph . . . (my previous best was 16.3, I guess that only having about 1/8 tank this time in my 30 gallon tank made a big differance
Anyway, I laughed my a** off when I later saw the ss driver hanging with the r/t driver I went against while waiting for my second pass . . . he asked if I had a blower . . . . you Lightning guys have nothing to worry about from either of those trucks.

Thanks for the compliments guys. Been a while since I've posted anything.
You won't find me at the dragstrip in this truck. There's not much point. Once you've raced in a Lightning, I can't see the thrill.
Just for arguments sake, if you take Lightnings out of the equation, these trucks are pretty stout. Can still put many rice machines in their place and hold its own against many vehicles. Do I wish that the General would build an L beater or competitor? You bet. The rivalry would be great. I so wished they would have built the concept. That was an awesome looking truck.
I had my fun in the L, and had much frustration as well. They are, in my mind, the sharpest looking and coolest truck available today.
But I just couldn't justify it this time around. I guess if I need a really good dose of acceleration, I'll bug out in my wife's Ram Air T/A. It's still a hoot.

Your '03 Silverado SS looks awesome. My comments still stand about Chevy being silly marketing the truck as a performance vehicle, but I'll say this:
The idea of a full-size, performance pickup that seats 5 and can be driven year round is appealing....very appealing!
I personally have a family of four (new 3 month old son) and in a year or so, I'll need to consider a more practical means of transport. While I would love an '02/03 Corvette Z06 to be my next ride, it's very likely to be a pipe-dream as I'll need (read: my wife wants) to have a vehicle that I can safely pick-up my son and daughter from school/day-care whether it's summer or the dead of winter.
The Silverado SS would be perfect. However, as it stands it wouldn't satisfy my craving for an exhilerating Sunday afternoon drive! A revised SS is rumored to be in the works, and if Chevy can have the following in the 'new' SS I'll be first in line to get one:
1. Current Vortec 6.0L pushrod engine makes 345 hp and 380 ft-lbs @ 4000rpms. Take the LS6 pushrod from the Z06, bore it out to 6.0L and tune it to produce 400hp and 430+ ft-lbs.
2. Lower the MSRP to 35K.
3. Enlarge the wheels from 8.5 inches to 9, and use 285/50 V-rated All-Season performance radials (not the 275/55 Mud and Snow tires).
4. Include a rear sway bar (anti-roll bar). Stiffen the shocks for a more sporty ride. (skid pad of 0.8+)
5. The LS6 pushrod returns great gas mileage. If the SS can get 15 mpg city and 20+ highway, they'll have a winner.
These changes should net a truck that'll do 0-60 in 5.5s, 1/4 in high 13s, while leaving it capable of being driven year round. The great gas mileage would be a practical plus to differentiate the truck from Ford's and Dodge's offerings - a true performance truck for the practical minded enthusiast.
That's my last 2 cents on this issue.
