HELP!! whats wrong with the truck?
Hey guys....
I took the truck to the local good guys to get my alarm system fixed (remote start, windows...etc)..And i get a call from the guy there...
I go over there, and while the truck is running, it idles REALLY rough... When I put it into reverse to move the truck out of the lot, it has trouble even moving, and when the steering wheel is turned, it almost dies, or in fact DOES die....
I managed to get it out of the lot and drove it home...it seems like after idle, the truck runs okay..but at a stoplight the entire truck shakes!! It also died once....
What could be the problem guys?? PLEASE give me some good news.....
thanks

motoxracer21,
Check the following:
Vacuum lines by the EGR tube. Some have been known to make contact and melt.
Spark plug gone bad? My truck also did the same thing you described. It turned out to be the #4 spark plug.
Check for coolant on the coils, passenger side. That has been a problem in the past also.
Fuel filter.
In-tank fuel pump pick-up line, disconnected?
Best of luck.

Heres another question...
I do have a warrenty, and just got some warrenty work done to it a couple weeks ago...
Lets umm...just for fun.... say I had a chip on there at one point. Since the check engine light IS on, does that mean they would go right to the Computer, plug something in, and have all the bells and whistles and sirens go off saying "CHIPPED" or something?? If thats true, (just hypothetically saying i DID have a chip.....) is there any way around it?
Or do they plug their diagnostic thing in somewhere else, so I shouldnt be worried about it? (Again, IF i had a chip.....)
thanks again

Get your ce light checked. It could be alot of things. Disconnected or bad injector, bad plug, dead coilpack, vacuum leak, is your rpms fluctuating alot? could be iac, egr is a good possibility too. That code off the ce light will help you alot.
Did you have a chip? Dont worry it the diagonistic machine plugs in under your steering wheel, take it to autozone.

ok cool...
The rpms do NOT fluctuate, it seems to run ok when I give it a little gas and start going. It starts to have trouble right after I stop completely at a Stop sign/stoplight. Again, the entire truck shakes, and it Idles very low, on the verge of dying, and sometimes ACTUALLy dying.
Keep the ideas comin guys, Thanks so much for your help, this is the best automobile message board ive ever been a part of

Two thoughts.
One. They disconnected the battery, and the computer's relearning.(far fetched but possible)
Two. They put an amateur on it. He messed up your wire loom.
As stated earlier. Find out what the CEL is. This could be the problem. Otherwise, the electrical guru at Good Guy's will have to retrace his installation procedure and make sure he didn't cut or short something out.
Also, check the battery cables. Maybe a loose connection.
Good luck on finding the problem.

The throttle position sensor will also cause those symptoms. So will fouled fuel injectors. So will a detached vacuum hose.
Chiltons repair manual for the 1997-00 pickups/expedition/navigator tells you how to check the TPS on page 4-15.
Rocks

If it didnt run that way when you dropped it off, then I would look at what they did. First, they had to "fix" your alarm/remote start system? Or did they install one? Most remote starts need a signal to let the "brain" know that the vehicle has started. This signal is an AC signal, most likley from one of your coil packs, ect...
I would find that wire (at the source, coil, pcu, ect) and disconnect it, and see if the problem remains. As stated earlier, check for vacumn lines, electrical connections (tps, idle speed ect..)
Let us know what it was....

Check your air intake. I once forgot to plug a few of the wires back in to it and there were similar effects.
Looks like you have alot to check out, but there was a court case that told Ford they couldn't deny warranty because of a computer chip.

Someone may have already said this but it could also be a fuel line disconected at one of the pumps. These truck wont run on one fuel pump. But my best guess is a vaccume line disconnected since they just installed/workrd on an alarm, and or remote start.
