Can you guys tell me why my plugs look this way? These plugs came of a relatively stock truck. All the truck had was a jlp intake, hypertech 160, and valve body. However, my truck had been pinging ever since it was pretty new.

I put nothing but 91 octane in it because that is the highest i can get from pump gas. Its been to the track about three times for a total of about 10 runs. I pun race gas in it a couple of times and octane booster in it once. Why do my plugs look like this?

Answered your own question. What gas are you using? Hypertech 160 = chip?

You've got a whole set of problems there, i think red = lean right? The others look like detonation and the blue one i just odnt know.

Pinging is NOT good

And the 160 TStat may be contributing to the massive fouling that is on those plugs. Almost looks like you are burning oil big time....

Looks like the plug is too cold and the tstat is too cold..

What plug is it ??
My best guess

Doug

EDIT - Just realised that only 2 of the 8 are fouled.
Smething is wrong in those cylinders. How much oil does the engine use ?

those were the stock motorcraft plugs. I recently got an oil separator wich should help with the oil burning problem, but yeah, those are the stock plugs.

ohh theromstat. Hmmmmm, , , i imagine that could be a problem, but i hardly think that would be the result.

Put new plugs in and then fix your pinging problem. I think if you fix that, youll fix your plug problem. Haven't you throw a ton of check engine lights?

yeah i just changed the plugs about 200 miles ago these are my current mods. No check engine lights whatsoever. What is wrong with my truck?

-JLP Cold/Ram Air
-JLP 6 lb Pulley
-NGK BR7EF .36 gap
-PSP Chip
-Hypertech 160* Thermostat
-Boost By-Pass
-REM Oil Seperator
-Metco Idler Kit

The truck still pings but i have an appointment to get it tuned on the 18th of Oct.

red is the fuel additive. Your plugs would be tore up if there were severe detonation problems. Like doug said it looks like oil. It looks like two normal plugs and oil fouled ones...

Would oil foul a plug that bad? They're kind of scary looking.

Oil would do that?

I mean i understand that oil fouled parts, but what about the big hole in the plug? Did you have that 6lber on at all for those last plugs?

i dont think that is a hole, maybe just deep deposit. oil will fowl a plug that bad, but your motor would have to be burning lotso oil. i dont think that the 160 is the prob, because you live in CA which is a pretty warm climate, i live in texas and havent had any prob with fouled plugs due to tstat (hasnt happened yet at all)

easter is right, red is additive.

but if your motor was pinging from the factory, youd probably see it in the plugs. doug is right, detonation is really bad, bad enough to destroy the motor within a few days with very little detonation

I pulled the stock plugs out of a 2000 l with 70,000 miles. The truck had mor extreme mods than yours, burned race fuel a lot, and a 75 shot. It was a daily driver. The plugs were "perfect"

I dont know what exactly is going on with your engine, but i would dare to say you have some internal problems on the two oil fouled cylynders. Have you noticed "smoke" coming out of the exhaust?? I mean those plugs are extreme.

I wouldnt be beating on this truck!! The other plugs which are showing signs of detonation could soon be oil fouled, if you catch my drift.

This is assuming the other plugs are peppered.

What year is your truck and does it have signs of piston slap. My 2002 with 28.000 miles, piston slap and a launched plug just got a whole new motor from Ford. Something more was going on but they wont say what, they just gave me a new motor I did'nt complain. They new something that I did not!
I think certain build dates have some serious issues, all I know is my new motor rules.
