How much does functional ram air help our supercharged motor?

I've always wished we had some kind of ram air. But we do. I've got 15 pounds of ram air going into the motor. But more of a functional ram air into the intake I mean. Do the functional ram air systems help?
Are there any comparisons between just an open filter and an open filter with a custom ram air set up? I like a lot of the set up's I've seen. I just don’t know how much ram air will help before the supercharger. Does it cool the intake temp down any with the new rushed air?

the fresh air systems are good, but real ram air can actually make your motor run leaner or so ive read

I run the scoop and hose into the engine bay to help reduce the temps under my hood. It really isn't a ram air setup, but it does help some.

Shaker hood

The Keystone Restyling shaker hood when used in conjunction with the Airaid cone style air filter kit is claimed to feed cool air and as speed increases one could assume ti to be a ram air setup.

Shane,

Anyway you look at it, more air than the factory set up is better
and the cooler the air, the better.

So with that in mind, yes we want an aftermarket filter,
some like to simply change the drop in to a K+N.
Everyone will agree that an aftermarket filter is a great cheap seat in the pants Mod, weather it be open or drop in.

With an open filter, would we rather get our air from the engine compartment or OUTSIDE AIR, of course outside air.

So to me it needs to be a combo of both, on idle and stop and go traffic, the JLP set up (I have that) takes it from the engine compartment, and as I get moving, mine now feeds cool air in from the factory fender set up, and also from a third source with the 3" air inlet taken it from the lower front.
I was stuck at 13.1 for a while waaaaaaaaaay back when,
once I went from an open filter, to a cool air feeding Box Design,
I finally got my 1st 12 ""and never looked back"",
so personally, YES I say it's good for ET improvement
Especially when racing in the heat.

So the question may be, is the hot engine compartment air hurting the intake temp, and does taken cooler air in from outside help,
YES IT DOES

"True ram air" can work against up like some said,
it could cause a lean condition, ""if it's not controlled"""

thanks for the replies. Forced air or a cold air intake can help us if tuned right. I will look into a custom ram air set up...

With having that scoop so open, do you get a lot of garbage into under your hood? How do you filter that out? Also what if it's raining, does rain ever get into your intake? Thanks, Shane

On the subject, do heat shields around the instake filter help any? They look kind of thin. How does the heat of the motor not get through the platic shield?
(thanks bmwbig6 for the pic below)

Thanks, Shane

Actually, I am adding fresh air ducting (Shocking's kit) to my heat shield. So the fresh air will help moderate the temps, but I will also test intake temp readings without the ducting first too.

I think all of the approaches mentioned will work as long as you're not pressurizing the intake... i.e. leave a way out for excess air to vent out, instead of forcing it all down the engine's throat (possibly leading to lean condition). If you really wanted a pressurized "ram-air" setup, you'd need to optimize the tune on your chip/computer accordingly.

what would my tuner do differently (to my chip) if I told them I was running a ram air system? thanks, Shane

If you had a "real" ram-air kit, you'd want to tune it live, and monitor A/F on the road (dyno won't show ram effect). Your tuner can make adjustments to the A/F accordingly, to prevent it leaning out at high speeds.

the shaker hood by keystone is Very nice.

it deposits the fresh air right where the airaid filter is.

It doesn't allow water to get to the filter, but water does collect in the scoop part.

The air is taken in the middle of the hood, sent forward, then directed to the drivers side where the filter is located.

you could keep your stock box and take the top off it and it would work nicely..

it would act more of a shield and block the air along with the water right? Shane
