Question Question about striaght pipes

Hi
I've wanted to ask a question about striaght pipes
Do you get more power by removing the muflers???
Is it safe for my engine???
I want to remove my muflers and a few people keep saying to me that it isn't good for the engine Is that true???

thanks

One thing is for sure, it's not good for the engine...I had a friend fry an engine by running straight pipes, it's just a matter of time before it happens. If you're going after sound throw on a magnaflow or dynomax they'll sound a lot better than straight pipes. Other wise get some headers, highflow cats, and a couple high flow mufflers...you'll get better performance than staright pipes. Just my .02

doesn't hurt a thing as long as you keep your cats. don't worry you will love the sound and gain 2 tenths in the 1/4. btw....a hellava lot cheaper

First of all how can you fry an engine by doing this? Second I took the cats out of my truck more than a year ago and have had no problems at all. It revs better and the SES can be fixed with a chip. I think the biggest exhaust restriction is the cats, I think that changing the exhaust and still using cats is a waste of money. Theres a thoery about back pressure, well I dont see top-drag racers using cat-convertors.

True, but top drag racers go through a few engines in a single season...just telling you what I've read and seen myself and that's that backpressure helps. P.S. - yes it is possible to ruin an engine that was designed to be run with back pressure without any cats or mufflers...just a matter of time

What I think is that any muffler should give enough back pressure. The better a motor breaths and exhales makes it run better.

Engines ran at high HP for years without cats. I don't see where it would hurt anything except in your emmisions test. I am not an engineer though, and would like to hear input from people that are more knowledgeable on the subject.

Just what is the premise for motor damage when running without cats or mufflers....

I ran cars for years without either.

I removed the muffler from my Black 99 L and it ran great. It was loud. I lost about a pound of boost but I know I gained HP. Loss some low end torque..but it only helped the launch.

I liked it....My wife hated it..She never asked to borrow the truck though..which was a plus...

Go for it...Just be careful when you shift at WOT next to someone with their window down..they will crap in their pants....

A motor is a pump....less restriction and opening the exhaust will garner power....physics 101....

I have a friend who doesn't have cats for the last 18K miles on his Lightning. He hasn't replaced the O2 sensors. Well, he only has the front two sensors, but he still hasn't replaced them. He also has a wideband honda O2 sensor and he hasn't had to touch that. He ran with straight pipes and cats for several thousand miles also with no problems. I know for a fact he had a Barrel of C16 (leaded gas) in his garage and that is almost all gone.
Maybe he is just lucky or something...
