'03 steering box improvements?

Ford announced with the '03's that they had improved the steering for quicker response. Anyone have any details on how this was accompished and if it is really noticeable?

As a followup, if it is just the box, could I put an '03 box in my '02?

Thanks

Tim,
My 03 is much quicker than my 99 was. It is also harder to turn. I'm not sure it's really that much better. We will see in Oct. when I go to my first road course event in the 03.

I swear I am not stalking you Tim, but once again our brains seem joined…

Here is what I found…

http://www.agrperformance.com/catalo...s.jspx?cat=100

AGR offers both quicker steering and variable ratio boxes, but I have not had a chance to call yet.

But I don't see anything at all on that site which fits the post-97 F150.

Choices for Ford Trucks are very limited. About the only way to improve steering performance is to install a well-built O.E. steering box, add a Super Pump and the ultimate setup would be to add a Rock Ram. AGR only offers a premium remanufactured O.E. steering box to replace the Ford type steering box. Due to the fact that steering boxes manufactured by Ford Motor Co. were never used in any performance or racing applications, no performance and / or modified components were ever produced. Adding to the equation, the scarcity of certain steering boxes prevents new components from being available. AGR steering boxes are manufactured with the highest quality new parts where available and all core components are thoroughly inspected and reconditioned. This is not your typical remanufactured steering box you get at your local auto part store. Only 66-77 Bronco (R&R only) used a Saginaw type gear and AGR does offer a few ratio / spool valve options for this application, but they are limited. All Ford applications can be modified for the Rock Ram System (a Super Pump must be adapted, see Ford Pumps).

I know the 99 through 02 Lightnings have a steering box upgrade from the normal F150's. However, im not sure if the 03's a quicker one over the previous years.

As with Jerry, I have had both a 99 Lightning and an 03 Lightning. Kind of hard to explain but yes...there is a difference. I notice if anything the steering is just more responsive when turning. I also don't have as much wandering on the highway as I did with the 99 but that may not have anything to do at all with the steering box.

I spoke with AGR and they have two boxes that will work for us. One is a 14:1 for “reverse” and the other is 12:1 for “standard”. The only problem is I have no idea if the OEM box is “standard” or “reverse”. AGR told me to turn the steering wheel clockwise and if the pitman arm turns clockwise then it was a standard box.

Tim I have a 99 and an 03 and would agree. The 03 feels quicker and more postive. 99 feels more isolated.

While were on the subject of differences. The 03's suspension is more harsh than the 99. The 03 will beat you to death on a concrete freeway.
