Transmission Question

I would like to know if the Lightning trans is different from the one in a reg F150 with the 5.4L. If it is different does anyone know what the difference is? I'm looking for componentry differences, not "it's built to take higher torgue". The reason I ask is that I am mulling over in my head the possibility of a KB supercharger and would like to make sure I have a trans that can hold up and rework if need be. Thanks

I know the L's have a 4r100 similar to the diesel tranny and I think the regulars have a 4r70.

Your 4R100 dwarfs a regular F150s transmission in every way possible. Maybe Gregg will chime in??

Most 150s have the 4R70W or 4R75 now.

The "regular" 5.4 model 4R100 (there are several for that motor) has 3 pinion planets all the way through, the L model has 6 gear pinions in a cast iron carrier in the forward and reverse, 4 in astel carrier for the OD. The L has a unique accumulator. Mostly the L is the same as either a deisel or V-10 in most places, but is the strongest non-PTO gasoline 4R100 ever built, the PTO is essnetially the same as a Lightning, the L converter is the v-10 model. A Lightning would proly go through a regualr Superduty 5.4 model tranny pretty quick, and is stronger than the V-10 model most places.

Mr. Ftech,

Question for you then. You talk about the 4r100 as mounted to the supercharged engines. I have an 01 Harley Davidson F150 with the 4r100. This is obviously a non supercharged engine. Is the tranny the same or not then. I've asked before and was told the FT valve body is the same across all of them. Is mine a lite duty 4r100 or what?

Thanks

You have a much lighter built 4R100. The one you have has a 3 gear planet in an aluminum carrier in both the forward and reverse, and a 3 gear OD planet in an aluminum carrier. The L has 6 gear cast iron planets in the forward and reverse, and 3 gear aluminum carrier for OD. Also, your accumulator is set up differently (a 2C will fix that) and you have a 4 bolt converter without brazed impeller and turbine, the L has a 6 bolt with both brazed. The L has the SD driveshaft yoke which is a bigger piece of metal the then little one on the regualr 5.4.
