You need to put another nut on the stud and work them against each other by backing them up against each other. It is hard to explain. Normally you would re-install the stud and work the nuts loose but I don't know if I would do that in a transmission. Try maybe using a vise but try not to ruin any threads.

go buy a new stud and nut, take a pair of vise grips and just loosen the old stud out. then take the new stud, thread it in, and take two nuts and put them on the stud in opposing directions. i dont know if that makes sense, but put one nut on backwards all the way and then one on normal all the way, tighten in there, then take the nuts off and you should be good. i think its more complicated than i describe.

i did the opposing nut thing and was tightening it... but the stud wont tighten... it gets kinda tight and once you reach a point it get real loose.. im worried i might have cross threaded the receiving threads in the tranny... when i pulled out teh stud there were little fragments of metal on there.. dont knwo if its from teh threads or if its anti-seize???
help!!

sounds like you stripped the threads.. use a tap & see if that fixes it.

Just buy a tap the same size as the threads. Take the nut w/ you to check the size. Run the tap to clean the threads in the tranny, it'll usually clean it enough to tighten. That should fix it.

I had a similar dilemma with my FTVB install. I didn't set the torque wrench properly and ended up overtorqueing (dont think I spelled that right) one of the bolts enough to break it off. Luckily, enough of the bolt was sticking out to get it out with vice grips, but I needed to find a replacement. I ended up just using a 10mm bolt that I found at Discount auto parts. Almost a perfect match for the stocker. I've still got the broken bolt just as a reminder of the endlessness of human stupidity (mainly mine). Just figured I'd share this to make you feel a little better.

thanks man, makes me feel somewhat better haha. ended up I had to use the helicoil kit.. it wasnt too hard, but I hope I did it correctly... Seems to shift fine.. not as hard as I expected but definetly quicker. Its probably b/c I just put on traction bars.

Inch pounds. 12 inch pounds per 1 foot pound
Gotta have the right tool for the right job. The only bad part is most inch pound torque wrenches are only good for up to 20 ft pounds, making it a tool you will rarely, if ever use again.
