L is sick

When the L is in drive at a light idleing, it seems to sputter a little, the rms drop off from about 640 or so to 570 by the digital tach. Is it time to change my fuel filter? How would i go about trouble shooting?

Idle
Air
Control valve

Its the valve attached to the passenger side of your upper intake manifold ( I believe by 2 8 or 10 mm bolts). It tends to get dirty and clogged over time. Just disconnect the plug, remove the two bolts, being careful not to tear the gasket b/w the IAC and manifold, and clean it out. Takes less than ten minutes and is worth a shot. Good Luck
