mixing wheel/tire sizes

has anybody got a 20x10 for the rear and a 20x8.5 for the front? I just don't like how the front looks like it sticks out of the fender a little. If so, what brand and size of tire have you gotten for those two wheel sizes?

thanks for your help,
josh

ok, so maybe I'm just making things more complicated than they have to be.

Is there any noticeable visual difference in the height of the sidewall between a 275/45/20 and a 295/40/20? There almost the same right?

I'm just looking down the road in case I ever go to a 4/6 drop. I don't want any clearance issues. That's why i'm leaning towards a 20x8.5 wheel with a 275/45/20 on all four corners. I like the way the 295/40/20 sidwall looks, so that's why I asked the question...

thanks for any opinions

I have 20" Factory Replicas with taller tires in the rear. It gives the truck a "crouching" forward look. One small problem is that the tires can only be rotated left to right. Also, the ABS kicks in when braking hard.

The truck is now for sale, see the Classifieds.

285/40/20 on 20x8.5's up front and 315/35/20 on 20x10's in back..It's all about correct backspacing...

Jeff,

Thanks for the reply. Can you give me some more info? How do I go about determining the correct backspacing? Also, what brand of tires are those on your truck? Did you get unidirectional tires so you can rotate them?

Thanks,
josh

The tires are Michelins Diamaris's(sp) They are the same ones used on the top line BMW X5...Backspacing is how much rearward your wheel lip goes from the wheel hube surface. I think stock is like 5.8". So on a 9.5" wide wheel 3.7" would be on the front side of the wheel surface mount. Since I have 20x10"s in the rear I went with a 6.5" backspace. With that on a 10" wide wheel 3.5" of wheel is on the outside which is close to stock and the wheel will not stick out of the well or be tucked in too much. On the fronts I have 20x8.5''s. I went with a 5.0" backspace which gives me 3.5" on the outside. This is the exact same nuber as the rear on my L.. I think max backspacing on the rear is around 7.0". It might be a little more and you could always massage the truck bed to make it fit.. The front will take at least the 5.8".

jeff,

Thank you very much for explaining that to me. I think I understand now. So say I wanted to get a 8.5 inch wheel for the front. I currently have the stock L wheel. I want the new wheel/tire combo to not stick out of the fender as much as it does now. I'm thinking I want it to move back into the fender about an inch from where it is now. What backspacing should I get with the new 8.5 wheel? Hope that wasn't too confusing.

thanks,
Josh

Jeff,

I was just checking out that tire tread. So, can you not rotate your tires?

If you want to go in 1" more on the 8.5 front then you would need a basically the stock backspacing of 5.8 with the narrower 8.5 wheel it would be tucked in 1" more..

Yes they can be rotated. They are not uni-directional. I cannot rotate from from to back because I have the 285's up front and the 315's out back. I can alway rotate side to side though...
