Bent axles?
The reason I ask is that my dad has had a constant shudder from the back when the brakes are applied. He thought it was warped rotors, and changed those without noticing a difference. The transmission strap - I guess it's a torque strap of some sort was also replaced as it had issues as well. This didn't change the situation much. Well, after looking at the wear on the new rotor and watch the axle spin, there is some runout there... this would be the cause of the pulsing / shudder feel. Changing an axle is going to be difficult since the ring and pinion would need to be re-set, correct?
You shouldn't have to do anything with the ring and pinoin gears. Your work should be limited to pulling the tire and brake assemply. Then there should be 4 bolts to undo that holds the axle / bearing into the outer part of the axle housing. Next you will need to open the differential and turn the ring gear until you see a 'C' clip inside the planetary gear assembly that the ring gear is attached to. Pull the 'C' clip for the axle, and it should just slide out. Don't mess with the ring and pinon alignment (that is the bearing assembly that holds the ring gear assembly), or you will have to take it to a shop to have it realigned correctly.
Chilton's covers axle replacement pretty good. The job isn't difficult, just messy (axle fluid, dirt, etc).

Since I just recently had the diff. apart to do some brake modifications, I can shed some light on this one. Removing the axles is actually quite simple.
1. Jack truck up
2. Remove tire on side you want to remove
3. Remove caliper
4. Remove rotor (hit REAL hard with a hammer to break loose) (May have to loosen e-brake some to get it off, too)
5. Remove diff. cover and let fluid drain
6. Rotate diff. until you can access small bolt that holds the large that goes through the spider gears in (small bolt, 3/8" head)
7. Remove large pin from diff. case (slides right out once bolt is removed)
8. Push axle inward (towards diff.) and remove c-clip
9. Slide axle out
10. Slide new axle in
11. Reverse all other steps
A word of caution: Do not spin the differential with that large pin removed. I accidently did this and the spider-gears managed to work themselves out. I didnt have the special tool required to suck the side-gears in to re-install the spiders and had to remove the whole diff. and take it to someone who had the tools.
Other than that its a breeze
