Alright...stereo speakers narrowed down

Alright, so since my subs/alpine deck and such got jacked about a month ago, I'm not going all out on the stereo again for at least a year or two. But I am going to get new door speakers. I'm narrowed it down between the Alpine 5x7 Type-R's and the JL 5x7 XR's. Anyone have a preference? Both seem to be great speakers. I just want a great sounding 5x7 that will put out some high quality sound, maybe a little bass since I'll be lacking subs for awhile - but I don't wanna break the bank. Any suggestions or feedback on these speakers or others?

I'd go with the JLs myself. Alpine makes great electronics, but their speakers are not top notch, in my opinion. And if you're doing 5x7", I personally would go with a good 6 1/2" component set. Much better bass and clarity, and they will fit in the stock locations with an adapter plate (takes about 5 minutes to cut one out.) Again, just my opinion.

Like this?

and...

I have completely changed things from how I had it back then, but it worked out pretty good with a 6 1/2 and tweeter on that custom plate. No metal cutting was required.

I have the Alpine 5x7's in my rear doors for fill. They sound ok. I haven't heard the JL's to compare with. I have a 2002 HD now BTW, not a lightning. I think the openings are the same though.

I wouldn't bother with components unless your getting a seperate amp to power them.

They are a very few components sets out there that run good off of deck power, and IMO they aren't that much but better then coaxals (meaning components off of deck power).

No if your gonna get a seperate amp to power them, components all the way, hands down, no question, etc....

If you're going for a direct fit, personally I'm a fan of Pioneer. If thats not an option then my vote is for the JL over the Alpines.

Out of the two you are looking at, I would agree that the JL's would be the best choice. Another couple good choices would be the Polk DX7 or the Eclipse point source 5x7's. ILike mentioned above, you can also open your choices up to a good quality 6.5" co-ax. The choices are many and adapter plates are a breeze to make. Most 6.5's have a little better bass to them. I would definitely stay away from components if you don't plan on running a seperate amp. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Hmm...thanks for all the feedback guys. The funny thing is, when they stole my alpine deck and my two 10's, they left the Kenwood 600watt amp I have. If this is the case, and the feedback seems obvious that I should utilize that power since it's not being used now, and get some 6.5" Components. I guess I'll be looking into a JL component set within the next few days.
