Weird smell???

I've owned my 2000L for 6 months now, and every time I bury the gas pedal to the floor for more than 10 seconds, I get this weird smell that fills the cab.

I've had my dealer keep the truck for a day and look it over completely, and everything was running perfectly. The smell still persists.

It doesn't smell like burning oil, and for the longest time I thought it was supercharger fluid that was burning off. It could also be moisture being burnt off the block or supercharger.

Is this smell common among other L's? Thanks!

exactly...it's definitely something you can live with. My wife barely detects it when she rides with me. I know it's not like an overly powerful smell...but it's a perceptible smell alright.

Nope. It's not anything I ran over. I had my dealer change the oil on the truck yesterday, and the underside of my engine block is clean as a whistle.

Try dumping some A/C deoderizer in the A/C system. Sometimes the mold gets dislodged under WOT and hence the smell. Just a thought but most undetermined smells do come from the A/C system. Good luck.

Called FORD SVT

I called 1-800-FORD-SVT and described the smell to them. I was told the following:

Check the dipstick on your engine. If the oil is 'at' or 'above' the max fill mark, under WOT oil from the engine may come up into the intake.

Solution: Remove the intake tube from the filter/MAF sensor and with a clean cloth wipe the inside of the tube completely. Smell should be gone completely.

I was also told that if the smell ever turned to an 'anti-freeze' like smell, then it could mean that there is an engine or intercooler coolant leak.

The smell is nothing to worry about though!

SVT was right!

After driving my truck home this afternoon, I let it cool for 45 minutes before taking the intake tube apart and checking for the oil.

At first glance I saw none, but on further inspection I found oil collected in the bottom part of the little ridges of the intake tube just behind the MAF sensor. I was surprised by the amount of oil collected, and it took me three shop towels to totally clean everything out.

Interestingly enough, there was none at the top of the tube near the opening to the supercharger, but all of the oil had collected in the ridges by the bottom.

I won't know if the 'smell' is gone until I drive the truck to work tomorrow morning. I'll check the intake again this coming weekend to see if anymore oil starts to accumulate again.

Thanks SVT!

When driving at 70mph on the interstate this morning going to work, I buried the gas pedal several times and the 'smell' was totally gone. Problem fixed!
