WTB phenolic
I would suggest just ordering it online. I picked up a piece from a local plastics supplier, but it still cost me as much as it would have should I have ordered it. Local dealers would obviously prefer to deal in larger quantity. In addition, they will have to probably custom cut you a piece if they don't have one lying around. If so, they may charge a fee for that as well.
I just finished mine up last night, but I have found that it didn't keep the upper plenum as cool as I expected. The phenolic definately keeps the heat transfer down, but the heat still comes from the EGR. Oh well, it at least smoothed the transition into the blower.

cooler upper intake plenum.

cooler intercooler fluid.
less exhaust gas gook in the engine.
easier to change spark plugs.
engine looks better without a big piece of rusted metal attached to upper intake.
when you remove the egr you can remove almost all of the crap associated with it including the solenoids.

Downside?
I forgot a few
it makes a good place to mount nitrous solenoids
you can use the vacuum fittings for something else or sell them to friends.
it makes it easier to change header gaskets
you don't have to buy a rebent egr tube if you use a phenolic spacer.

yes, I know it is messy right now. I keep on messing around with stuff...

control detonation
The EGR is used to control detonation. By adding in already combusted air, you are essentially adding filler (no O2) so you are richening the mixture.
I'm suprised that removal doesn't set a SES light. It should.
The EGR is used to control cylinder temperature as well cylinder too hot, open valve, richen mixture, lower temp.
It's not the best thing to remove, but it also won't completely destroy your truck or the enviroment.
