Woodward Dream Cruise
Your best bet is probably to take I-94 to I-696 westbound. Get off at Woodward (M-1) and turn right (north). The best part is from there to Birmingham (~5 miles), although it runs from south of 8 Mile Rd. in Detroit, up around Wide Track Drive in Pontiac. We used to park just north of I-696 and walk up and back (my brother refers to that plan as the 'Death March'). The last couple years we have parked near Beaumont Hosptial (13 Mile Rd.) and looped both ways, depending on energy/weather. This year we're thinking of parking at one end, then taking the shuttle bus to the other end and walking back. It's fun to cruise (we'll be in a Viper & Corvette), but you see much more walking.
You need to see all the manufacturer's displays which require walking as parking near them is expensive or unobtainable. There is usually free parking a couple blocks off Woodward in the neighborhoods. Definately walk downtown Birmingham, west of Woodward and south of Maple (15 Mile).
Good Luck! Get there early to avoid the jamb. Wave if you see us.

I drove my buddy's new Viper from Pontiac down to 8 MIle then back up to almost 12 before my clutch leg gave out. I didn't want to cramp up and run into someone, so I traded him back for my Lightning. MUCH easier to drive in stop-and-go traffic.
Beautiful weather, fewer cops then past years, so many great cars, total sensory overload! I didn't see as many Lightnings as usual. Lots more Fords then in past years when it seemed to be a GM/Mopar fest.
Got to go to the new GM Heritage warehouse Thursday night. WOW! Concepts, first & last builds, race cars, engines, dealer promo models, signs, service equipment... It's not open to the public, so you'll need to find someone to get you in. Well worth the effort!
Went to the NASCAR race at MIS yesterday on an all-access pass, so it has been a gearheads dream the last few days!
