Question Daily Drivers With 6lb Pulley Questions?

Does your trucks have a hard time with detonation? I have a 6lb lower with a 2.80 upper and anything over 6-8lbs of boost and it detonates. Its 75 -95 degrees here in Texas. The reason I ask is I can't pass a vehicle on the highway. I had my #1 side chip burned for 93 octane safe program. I use only Texaco gas. I have a bottom end with all the porting on heads and intake. So I can't efford to go back in my heads cause I burned another valve. Help me out and I can't efford to run 100-150 dollar tank of gas per day either. So should I just buy a #2 pulley and go down or see if my chip can be safer?

I run a 6lb lower and have detonation all over the place. I tried to have my truck dyno tuned and it didnt work. Im thinking about going to an interchangeable lower setup and run either 2 or 4 on the street and 6 or more at the track.

Man I feel sorry for your guys

I run a 4lb lower and 2lb upper on pump gas
with and without Nitrous
Cold or warm weather
(i do take upper off in deep winter, but it doesn't detonate)
AND HAVE NEVER EVER HAD DETONATION

oh ya, thats with 18 degrees of timing
YES 18 DEGREES
My mild side is 16 degrees. (I only use that for Nitrous)

The funny part is I only run 94 Ultra and just yesterday I was too far from my regular Sunoco (I only use one station to fill)
and for the 1st time I had to get gas out, I put 93 octane Mobil in it and I was worried but today it was in the mid to hi 80's, and for thre first time I had to use the A/C all day. STILL NO DETONATION

I guess climate and sea level do make a big difference

I run a 6# lower on 91 octane with no detonation, even towing a trailer.

Interesting.... I run an 8lb lower along with a 2lb upper no detonation on 93 octane and no problems with my built engine. Matter of fact it's much hotter here in the Houston / Galveston area than where you are due to the much higher humidity. Galveston was 113 degrees, with the heat factor figured in, today.

Jim (JDM) knows how hot the Texas weather is and sometimes crappy gas we get here and am surprised you are having problems.

I know this doesn't help now but would suggest when the JDM crew gets out here for FFW in Ennis have Jim data log your truck.

Wow, weird. Lots of people run 6#ers with no problems whatsoever regarding detonation. My suggestion would be to get your chip reburned. Add some fuel and/or pull some timing. You should be able to run a 6# just fine without detonating...

Could it be something to do with your fuel system? Like a clogged filter, etc.? Does it happen at WOT? Tip-in? What rpm range?

I have a 6# and use 93. If I get under about 65 (temp.)I start pinging. But about 75 and up no prob. This is side 1.

Side 2. Pings like crazy if it's cooler than about 85!!!!! But gets on with it!!

I'm running 22psi and 93 octane w/o detonation(at least none that I can hear over the catless exhaust.) Of course it is only 12.5 degrees of timing.

The solution is to have a chip burned while you are on a Dyno.

Tim, ive seen you have had some pretty bad problems with your tune, i saw youre burnt valve on talon forum. id suggest maybe trying a different tuner. you should take it to terry since hes our local tuner and have the chip reburnt.

I have a 6# pulley awaiting install, I was going to have one of the tuners send me a chip, but would rather have a custom dyno tuned chip. Since I live in Irving, who is Terry and what type of chip does he carry/dyno?

I had been driving my truck every day til I wrecked it, but anyways I was putting 400-600 miles a week on her w/ a JL 10# and no problems whatsoever.

TIM, you need a reburn. Next time your in Dallas, I would pull up to a dyno that can measure air/fuel and get it done. Then send the sheets to Jim and get a reburn.
