Lightbulb Interesting Dyno Run Today...Check it out..

Well I finally got my truck Dyno tuned today, went down to Apex motorsports right around here in santa clara. Tuned by Byron (great guy, a friend of Sal's).
My Basic mods for reference: 2001 Lightning
PSP 2lb pulley
PSP Chip (2-way)
PSP Open air Filter
Denso IT20s
Bassani Cat-back

Did about 8 pulls on it, first run (on the safe side of the chip) I got 351hp and 424 torque..

After trying to lean the A/F out a bit, it turned out the truck actually LOST power down to about 345 or so...

What ended up gaining power was to actually RICHEN the A/F to around 10:1 or somewhere around there i believe...Interesting isnt it? The beast wanted more fuel!
Anyways on the last Run, I ended up with 356.2 hp and 436.1 lbs of torque..

What do you guys think? Is this about where I should be? This BTW is all on the safe side of the chip, we put it around 9 degrees of timing, and had the street perf. side at around 12 degrees, even though suprisingly the truck didnt respond very much to timing changes, which was a bit weird. (the truck STILL pings ever so slightly on the street perfomance side. Crappy 91 octane Cali gas )

PS. When they go WOT, man that supercharger screams bloody murder in the shop! WOW!! And the best part was watching Byron with his head under the hood listening for pinging! I was about 15 feet away and I had my ears plugged! That guy is going deaf REAL soon, hehe...

Glad you got byron working on your stuff. He is a good dude.

As far as #'s, is this a 99/00 model?

I was thinking that it would be a little closer to the 375-400HP range?

hmm... those #'s seem low. With 0 mods, I was at about 350hp/430tq.

With a chip/filter I was at 376/450. What type of dyno was it?

I have almost the same mods:

Diablo Delta Chip
JL 3#Pulley
JL Ram Air
Bassani Cat-back
Denso Plugs

This last weekend down in LA at Superior Automotive Engineering in conjunction with SoCal Diablo, I pulled a 380.1hp/462.4 TQ at the Rear wheels on a conservative program. On my race program for higher octane gas, I pulled a 390hp/472ft/lbs TQ. I was hoping to hit 400hp/500TQ, but I think with the mods I'm planning (E-fan/Pump, SB t/b, and traction bars) it isn't that far away. I have no doubt that with a 4#'er I could have been close to 400/500 also.

Even though your only "power mods" for the dyno are the 2 lb. and chip (the filter will net some gains but probably not much on a stationary dyno), you should see a little more power, maybe around 370-375. I've seen stock trucks dyno 350ish to 360ish. It also seems odd to see that you peaked when running 10:1 AFR. That is really rich and this isn't a turbodiesel where you can turn it up and it'll run like a champ. Maybe something in your fuel system is clogged malfunctioning? I would think 10:1 is too rich and you would lose power, not gain. Just my thoughts.

I run a 4#, chip, jlp ram air and Magnaflow catback and see 417hp/513 tq at rear wheels at 11.8 a/f.

You should easily be @ 370ish. Was this HP measured on a Dynojet?

Whoa that's pretty good. I didn't even see those numbers with my efan and some other mods. With 4# and chip (91 oct street side) I pulled 394/495.6.

Those are still good #'s. Prior to this tune, i was making 387/490 tq with a loss of boost due to a lifted cylinder head. People claim the magnaflows dont make power or something

Moto... Sal and Byron are pretty tight. Maybe Sal can give him a call and figure out why your #'s are so low. Do you have another dyno you can goto to see if there is a difference in HP?

Yep....

Does seem a bit low......Bone stock, my 02 dynoed 354/416 in 78-80 degree weather. Not even a K&N

I would agree that you should be around 370ish and in my opinion 10:1 is WAY to rich...especially with that low of timing. The richness may be causing the pinging you are hearing (or it just may be exhaust pulses)

Tom

The the back side of the passenger cylinder head to see if its leaking. Next would be checking for belt slip.

Man I'm glad I don't life in California
I've found over and over again (through 10 Chip programs) that mine runs absolutely schitty with anything less than 15/16 degrees of timing. I'm currently driving 24/7 on my 18 DEGREE TIMING performance program on the street and I have never ever had pinging or detonation.
Last yr I ran 17 degrees all winter long for months in a row of single and double digit degrees with again no pinging on pump gas. I do only use Ultra 94 though.
Are you sure you got the timing right ???
9 degrees is below stock isn't it ???
