Legal everywhere .. Thats a broad statement.

I cant think of ANY car that comes from the factory with fog lights that turn on without the headlights. Maybe Im out of the loop but I cant think of one.

Doug

Here are snippets I found on the web

""A person must not cause or permit: any fog light affixed to a motor vehicle on a road to be lighted except in fog, mist or under other atmospheric conditions that restrict visibility ie. Heavy rain, snow fall." SOURCE: Road Transport(Vehicle Registration) Regulation 1998, division 5 clause 55(a).
THE INFRINGEMENT NOTICE THAT CAN BE ISSUED SPECIFICALLY FOR FOG LIGHTS: `UNLAWFUL USE OF FOG LAMP` $74."

"In addition, the 2001-2003 Oregon Driver Manual states it is also illegal to have auxiliary lights or fog lights on by themselves or on at times when you are required to dim your headlights. These very bright lights make it difficult for oncoming drivers to see." http://www.odot.state.or.us/comm/news/2002021201.htm

From the PIAA website

" Fog lights are intended to be used in conjunction with standard headlamp low beams. Driving lights are mounted to provide illumination forward of the vehicle and intended to supplement the high beam of a standard headlamp system. It is not intended for use alone or with the low beam of a standard headlamp system."

My Friends new 2003 Mustang GT lets you run parking lamps with fogs, no mods required. My dad's 2001 BMW 530i lets you run parking lamps with fogs as well, no mods required.

how do you splice them withoug cutting them?

Frank, I just used a single edge razor to trim a litle bit of insulation off of #2 and #12. Then just took a piece of wire about the same guage and spliced it between the two wires.
Used some black tape to neatly cover the splices. A real simple procedure..

Not sure why, mine is a 2000 and that is what the mod in the instructions was performed on. Anyboby have any thoughts, I really dont want to have to cut on the switch to do the mechanical mod!

In the stock mode of operation, you are only able to activate the fog lights when the headlight switch is in the full 'on' (or headlamp position), mainly because it is the only position where you can physically pull out the switch to activate the fog lamps.

You have to alter the BOTH the truck's headlight switch mechanism and wiring.

Well, for only one reason of many, some people use fog lights as DRLs (Daytime running lights) especially on certain roads that are known for lots of traffic accidents. Indeed illegal to do this in some states. Probably not usually enforced but depends lots on the state. Most likely these words spoken politely .... "Officer I did not realize they were on and it will not happen again intentionally" will satisfy most law officers BUT then again I am 54yo.

The wifes BMW 328ci has foglights that turn on with the push of a button, regardless of which other lights are on.

I should mention that that splicing/bridging the #2 and #12 wire together as instructed in the wiring portion of this document, will cause the fuse #27 to burn out so remove fuse #27 prior to the splicing/bridging . This does not seem to be harmful in any way. L owners that have done the mod as far back as 2000, found no fuse #27 after the mod has no impact on the vehicle what so ever. Figured I should mention this.

Fog lights ON mod done and Deer

It seemed the fog light mod post here brought varied comments from it's illegal to run fogs and, and..... Anyway, I wanted to add something additional here. I did not realize that with the mod I did I also gained the ability to run my foglights WITH my high beams. This is a major PLUS/BIGGE to me as I live on the East Coast (I lived on the West Coast for 17 of my adult years) where deer are everywhere it seems at night. Less hunting and more mean deer are around in even greater numbers. I work nights and drive a 25 mile trek to work on the Taconic State Parkway and then into farm country and to be able to run the fogs with the high beams really is a PLUS as it makes it way easier to spot deer on and alongside the roadway. With the SilverStar fogs and headlights on high beam the road is really lighted up now..... So, illegal or not the mod end results have my vote! I can run the fogs as daytime running lights on treacherous roads and as the combo hightbeam and fog as deer spotters on the way to work.
