Question What the heck is this sound?

Did a search, but came up with nothin'. I know I've read about this here before:

While accelerating, I get what sounds like a like rattle, which gets louder the farther down I push the gas pedal. Now, I remember it on my '01 -- it almost sounds like injector noise -- but I never heard it this loud. My passenger even asked what the noise was.

I don't think it's an exhaust leak, and it certainly doesn't sound like detonation. Open your hood at idle and listen to the injectors. That's what it sounds like...only louder (as I push the pedal down) and faster (as the engine revs higher). Should I be hearing the injectors in the cab? Do they really get that loud in the '03's?

No, but what you are describing is detonation. or you have a very loose spark plug, soon to be noticed.

Well, that would totally suck, since I only have 1,100 miles on the truck. It just doesn't sound like the detonation I've heard before; no ping or clatter. I have definitely wondered about the loose plug thing, however. At 500 miles, I took it to the dealer to inspect the plugs. They told me they checked 'em out, but they could've been blowing smoke. Well, dang.

Thanks, 1BADTK, for the input.

I'm sorry, I don't think it's detonation http://www.hastingsmfg.com/Service%2...detonation.htm --not in an 03 with only 1,100 miles on it--not unless the factory really fornicated-up. An exception would be if you got a tankful of 87 oct. fuel but that's not likely.

Nor do I think you're hearing the f/i's in the cab.........

Then, what is it? Maybe a loose or 'too close' catalyctic convertor heat shield? Something else that is loose or out of alignment? Something is 'touching' something else when it shouldn't.......

I also get a rattle noise only right before shifting, and only when at around 2.5k rpms'

just had my plugs changed about 3k miles /5 months ago.

Valve clatter? I think that's what I've been hearing on my truck since day 1... Kind of annoying sounding in the cab, not OVERLY loud, but made me wonder...

hmm

my father noticed the same thing on his 03 this weekend. Under 2k miles on it. Put our trucks side by side and mine makes a similar noice , but no where near as loud. This is when the engine is hot, not upon startup. Idles very erratic too.
