extruded upper plenums???

What kind of gains are you guys getting with the extrude honing the upper plenums?

How many of you guys even got this done and how many plan on doing it eventually?

I have one and I think it's a good mod. I put the intake and a billet flow tb on at the same time. The lightning feels stronger to me. The butt o-meter say's . Hope this helps. Will be going to the dyno soon.

I'm callin BS on these gains:

PHP High Flow Upper Intake Manifold - After the throttle body, the next restriction would be the upper intake manifold. We've been able to extrude hone this part to straighten the air flow and increase air speed adding 10-15 horsepower and 20-25 lb/ft torque
That being said, I was planning on opening up and polishing the plenum on my Cobra.

I just installed mine a couple of weeks ago Killa. I haven't been to the dyno yet though. Check out this link for a little info. BufordTJustice has dynoed his.

Joe,

Shoot me an e-mail and I'll hook you up with some dyno results on both the Extrude Honed upper and one that was ported by someone here in town. e-mail address is dandkmcguire@***.net.

I picked up zero at stock boost levels. Might have helped a little with the Kenne Bell. I know of other trucks that picked up 5 to 8 rwhp. The inside sure looks a lot nicer now. Skip

Near-zero is probably a decent number for a stock truck with an Extrude Honed upper and 5-8 is probably more accurate for modded trucks...BufordT may have seen 12 but I imagine that the pulls were done on different days with different weather conditions or different dynos. On my truck, which has the mods listed in my signature, I saw the following:

Going from the stock upper plenum to an Extrude Honed upper plenum from PHP netted me a maximum gain of 5.8 hp and 5.6 ft.-lbs. The average gain across the rev range (3100-5600 rpm) was 3.0 hp and 3.9 ft.-lbs. My peaks on the stock upper plenum were 414.0 and 511.2 and the peaks with the Extrude Honed piece were 416.9 and 515.5. Both of these runs were on the same day. So, is it worth the $150...depends on what you've already done to the truck. A chip and pulley is cheap horsepower all things considered so I wouldn't do it before either of those items. I would do it before dropping $1500 on a full exhaust for the gains that people are claiming to get from that.

Just for grins I also had an upper intake plenum port matched and cleaned up a little from someone in town who builds race engines. He charged me $100 for the job and the results are as follows:

The dyno pull with the Extrude Honed upper and a new chip burn yielded 416.5 and 516.6. That same day I put the hand-ported upper back on and got 414.6 and 511.1. On average across the rev range (3200-5600 rpm) I lost 3.0 hp and 3.4 ft.-lbs. So, if you're going to have anything done to your upper intake plenum I would suggest getting it Extrude Honed. This seems to jive pretty well with people's claims of having seen no gain or losses from hand ported upper plenums.

With that said, my hand ported intake is now on its way to Extrude Hone so at least it will be matched on both ends and Extrude Honed (along with being Jet-Hot coated when I get it back).

The claims of 10-15 hp and 20-25 ft.-lbs. are a little steep for this mod...if you don't expect much from it you certainly won't be disappointed.

Hey Odin's Wrath, Is that upper plenum Painted? Cause it looks a little darker? I wouldn't mind having one but I would want it to look stock on the outside.

It's a Harley plenum. It's shiney and everything else in the pic is flat black. It looks better without the glare that's present in the pictures. You can have the stock plenum done just as easily.

When I dyno tested the ported plenum I got from REM, I came up with almost exactly the same results you did. Loss of power. Can't explain that one.

Thumbs up Good Info Struck in AZ

Informative post. That's why I still come back and post here once in a while SON. FYI, same dyno, SAE corrected. (I never quote STD figures.) No other changes. I picked up .1 tenth and almost a MPH with slightly higher temps and at the same track. Similar 60' times. Went from a 12.46 to 12.36 at full trim 4935 lbs. Higher boosted trucks can only benefit. My EXTRUDE HONE intake flowed 965 cfm in 28" water. Stock the same upper intake flowed 850 cfm in 28" water. Worth $150. Much more so than a $500 shiny TB, that's for sure. Hope this helps.

BTJ

P.S. Odin's Wrath, what happened to your AFM Power Pipe? Myself and ThunderStruck are still running ours. I have gotten a 12.01 out of it and ThunderStruck nailed an 11.92 with his.

Question

Hmmm. I think I will be purchasing one very shortly. But what about an Extrud Honed Plenum and one of those Phenolic(sp) spacers from JDM>??? Any thoughts on that>??? If you can see a honest tenth and a MPH out of the Plenum I am sold for only $185. -Mat-
