dyno #'s - k&n vs 12inch power stack?

I was wondering if anyone has dynoed their truck using these? what were the results?

k&n panel w/ modded stock airbox
vs
12 inch power stack filter.

I was wondering this cause all i hear is ... "Yeah, my blower sounds louder", "seat of my pants feels better"

I wanted to see numbers.

thanx

Just switch them at the track like I did in my 2000L. Was consistently .15 sec faster with stock airbox w/K&N than the open 12" airkit. This was a stock, unmodded airbox.

Cool

This is not exactly an answer to your question.

But, I did a bone stock air box - to - stock box with holes & a K&N panel filter. (1/4 miles dragstrip comparison)

It consistantly dropped me .1 on the ET and gained 1mph.

BTW: Your question would nessesitate some assumptions on what level of air flow/boost your refering to. Are you talking stock air flow levels? Or elevated (like with a 6# lower)?

WOT

your answer

there is no excact answer...........sorry...hehe

This is what I know , from following this same debate for a while.

On cooler days, or dynoing in cooler temperatures.........the open filter is the better choice.

When it's hot, or the air temperature is high..........the stock box is the better choice.

The optimum choice I think right now is JLP's ram air.........or PSP's Fast Air system. Still hoping for JDM to conjure up something

12 inch filter like the JLP or PSP ram air or like the open JDM/LFP ones?

On a stock truck, the modded airbox may flow better quality (cooler) air than the 12 inch and may net you some more power, but the 12 inch still flows more in the end. More surface area. Thus I would think more flow + other mods = better performance.

Back in 2001 I was quicker in the 1/4th mile by .1-.2 seconds with the stock air box. It was very hot outside and the stock box keeps the hot engine air from being forced into the engine. I now am running 20+psi boost so the stock box isn't an option. I don't think it is an option over 13psi anyway. I wish someone would come out with a kit which would include a huge completely sealed box, 12" filter, and radiator expansion tank relocation kit.

I have the following info written down, not sure where it came from. Maybe turbonetics...?
4" connection size, 6" to 4.63" cone filter
9" filter 625 hp
12" filter 850 hp
14" filter 1000 hp

hrmm... i swear... this should be simple. refering to added boost . i have a 4lb lower. yeah...jlp's setup looks nice. still don't want to drop freak'n 300 + dollars for the filter, cool air, box, etc.. So much more power to be had out there for that much money. from the likes of you guy's posting its not worth the money especially in the southern region of Soviet Union, i mean, umm, United States.

Nate: two ways to do this to save some money:

a) Homemade (including box)

b) buy a used one. I've seen brand new in the box "pre-owned" go for about 200-250. Comb the classifieds and you'll come up with a better deal than one straight from the vendor. Or if you're going to any of the big events (WFC, LightningFest) I'm sure some vendors will have their products there at reduced rates.

Hope this helps....

Shoot me an e-mail at dandkmcguire@***.net and I'll send you an Excel spreadsheet with more info than you ever wanted to know about the 12" S&B's versus the K&N and modded airbox, etc. plus some other mods tested one at a time...
