nhra rules and lugs?

ok, i found out earlier today that you have to have open ended lugs when running slicks on the rear. but my question is do you have to have open end lugs if you are running front runners?

also just curious as to why this is anyways?

any info is appreciated!

The reason for open lug nuts is so when the inspector looks at the lugs they can tell that the studs threads are at least 1/2 into the lug nut. I also had open lugs on all wheels on my race and sreet cars I ran slicks and skinnies. The problem with the front is that if you run say a centerline wheel, std studs hardly even come a 1/4 of the way though the rim. I don't have a NHRA rule book any longer so I can not say what is needed anymore. The other thing is that the rules change as you get faster. It used to be up to 12.00 you need min. It is all to protect you.

You only need open lugnuts on modified rears...stock rears are fine with regular lugnuts.

Heh, just cut your tops off your lug-nuts and cut them short enough so that the stud is atleast 1/2 the way through it. No wait, thats a bad idea!

Ron,

i called weld today, and they said that they didnt make an open end. i might be able to get them from centerline but id have to know exactly all the measurements of the lugs because it is a mag shank style. give me a call and we will see if we can get this straightened out

You do not HAVE to have open ended lugnuts. The rule is that the stud must thread into the lug, at least the diameter of the stud. So if you had a 1/2" thick stud, the it must thread into the lug at least a 1/2" PAST the rim surface. Open end lugs make it easy to see that, but open end lugs are really for vehicles that have long aftermarket studs. However, be prepared to remove a closed lug if the inspector chooses to check.

Holy crap Sal....you don't know what a relief it is to read that. A buddy of mine out here had me thinking I was screwed for Houston FFW next weekend.

Thank You Again,

Gavin,

Your help in this was much appreciated. It looks like I was being steared in the wrong direction by a buddy that thinks he knows it all. I should have known better...LOL. Thanks for hunting those down for me and posting this thread while I was out of pocket yesterday.
