I am guessing that this is the same thing as the Hyper tech block ventilator. Save your money.

Question I'm still curious about this stuff too...

dirtchicken: "I am guessing that this is the same thing as the Hyper tech block ventilator."

I think there is some confusion here. dirtchickken you once told me about a "block ventilator" from hypertech in a previous post... I have never seen anything of the sort. Anyway, I don't think that is what Lightningquick (and I for that matter) are wondering about. I could be wrong but I think we are both wondering about the microtuners (superchips and hypertech both make a similar product) which allow you to plug into the diagnostics port (?) to manually reprogram the PCM.

Question one more thing...

Hey Doug...

can you get us some feedback as to whether these things (microtuners) are worth it? Any info you can come up with (maybe from the guys in Talon if they are using them) would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Drew

Don,you defy the laws of racing. How it is that a person drives a 10 second truck home in pouring rain from NJ to Ma is got me confusedIf anybody said it 5 years ago, people would call him a liar. These lightnings shore have changed what is possible in racing.Until the lightnings you NEVER even really saw 11 or 12 second cars or trucks on the street. They were always trailered and were usually gutted............they certainly didnt just do it with $1000 worth of mods. For all you newbie racers,You have no idea how good us lightning owners have it!

I know somebody who has the Superchips Micro Tuner on his L, and it works OK. The good news is that it does pull harder, seems to make more power by the seat of the pants meter, and not butchering your computer is the best part.

The bad news is that you have no control over the transmission "Fart" shift, it removes it completely. Even on the minimum setting it shifts too hard for me, I worry about long term abuse of the trans. Can't leave it alone by setting to "Manual" transmission either.

If I could change it I would add the ability to leave the stock transmission shifts, and just change engine parameters.

As far as block ventilation goes, it's not designed for over boost pullies, so if you bolt on a 6lb pully with the Micro tuner you will blow it up. But you would have to be really stupid to do that.

Hope this helps.

Yeah, I have one...

...and I like it, just fine, thank you.

As mentioned above, it is not for heavily modded Lightnings. I just have a K&N; air-box mod, and the Micro-Tuner. I decided on the M-T over a std chip because of the "stealth" factor (no physical PCM installation that the dealer can use to justify voiding your warranty). I also own a '97 F150, which I can transfer the M-T to during the winter months when the L is in storage. So, the comment that it works only on one truck...just ain't so.

I could tell immediately, at least SOTP-wise, that I had more power, after installation. Sure, the shifts firmed up a bit, but certainly not overly so, as some have stated here. If you drive "normally, it shifts pretty mildly, but if you get on it, it shifts much more quickly, but not violently.

So, for me, it has worked out pretty well.

As for real horsepower gains, there was a discussion over on NLOC about some guy who did a before/after dyno test and, if I remember correctly, gained almost 30 horsepower over stock. Not too shabby, IMHO.

They can be reprogramed just like a chip can. If you step up the mods, you just let them know what you've done and send it back for changes. The Hypertech unit is set up the same way. The one I had for my '99 SS was anyway. Should be the same deal.

transmission

i would just put a factory tech valve body in. You leave the transmission settings stock with it anyhow, and you can't get anymore stealth then that

The ONLY reason i am going this route is because of the fact of been through 4 tranny's and 2 motors in my 00 truck.I'd rather stay stock with my 02 then fight ford for warranty so this is my only choice until 36k.What i am looking for is the same throttle response and similar power that my old chips used to have back in 00.Im hoping that it works enough to get me in the 12s.I was told by JDM that i could get a custom tuned one for my truck with one of his programs. This is what i wanted but it seems there is more to the story then what i was told so im gonna just try this out and see what happens. It came from JDM.

There are 2 things that concern me.

1. I hope the generic superchips program is aggresive enough to really make a difference.I dont expect it to be as wild as some i had but a nice tune would be nice.I know "superchips" is pretty conservative..WITH THEIR TUNES (OFF THE SHELF).....Well see soon enough.

2.I was told by jdm that I CAN use it with my 4lb pully and i hope this is true.....From what i have read, you are not supposed to.I hope JDM is right. If i know half as much as i think i do about tuning. In HIGHER boost conditions, tuners actually DETUNE a little to compensate for added boost. If this is the case then with a 4lb pully,if i do not get any detonation then this generic chip should really end up being agressive WITH a pully....You know what i mean???.........I am basicall shooting for 12.5-6 with tuner/4lber/intake/valvebody...........Anything in the 12s consistantly with full warranty would make me happy. After running 13.6 STOCK as a rock,Im not asking for too much.....

I recently installed the Micro Tuner 1715, and I’m very happy with this program. My shifts are much firmer and definitely have more throttle response. I wish i did this before but i'm also planning to get the line mod valve upgrade; this should help my tranny a bit.

Besides the increase performance with the Micro Tuner I really like the code reading function and it’s ability to go from performance program back to stock, when I have to go in for service.

Also if you do get the Micro Tuner before you install or remove the program, remove the fuel pump fuse. And make sure that all power-draining accessories are turned off, like amp, radio, dome-lite, etc. the tuner needs full battery voltage to program.

Not trying to take anything away from the Lightnings but, have you ever heard of the Buick Grand National>??? 10's even a couple 9's on a stock bottom end. Fully streetable 9,10,11 second GNs and Turbo Regals out there. -Mat-
