What is the difference between a built shortblock and a stock Longblock?

I was browsing through parts over at R.E.M and there is finally a pic up of a Longblock. What is the difference between the longblock and a short block? I just see the lb has heads and valve covers and all...

But the short block comes with forged pistons,Plasma moly rings and either Manley or Eagle H-Beam rods. And its Good to 800 Horsepower.

The prices are pretty similar, if I can get more info on the differences between the 2. I've always bee looking at a built bottom end... What block is reccomended for use with an aftermarket blower?
This isn't something I'm doing tomorrow, but I am already planning on putting a built block and an aftermarket blower in my L a year or 2 down the road. There are a lot more bolt on's I have to do, and I need a stall and a monster box first. But a block and a blower are both in mind and would be really nice to have. I'd really appreciate it. Thanks, Shane

the first pic is of a stock longblock, it still has the "low performance" rods. it has the stock heads with 3-4 spark plug threads. the bottom pic is of a built shortblock with high performance rods, pistons, head studs, etc. that's why it is good for 800hp. I dont see why you would buy a built shortblock and put the stock heads with the messed threads in them. you might as well fix the thread problem and while your at it get em ported and a valve job. guys are running 10's with stock blowers now, so while a KB is awsome, its not the only way to the 10s

yeah, what I planned to do was get a built short block and then get my heads ported. I was just wondering what the Long Block was all about.

cool, is it better to buy a built block or just can I rebuild my block? I can get rods, pistons, and all that and put them in my block. If I'm paying for labor either way, whats the best thing to do? Is it better to get it all done from a tuner and have them give you the block already balanced, or can you build your own "built block" with some of there upgraded internals?

Also, whats a good cam to go with if it's still going to be driven on the street?

Lastly, what are my options with heads? Have mine done or I can get new upgraded ones. What's better.
Thanks, Shane

drive to florida, drop your L off at rem, ask them to install a built bottom end with a works 140 blower, then ask them to install a 250 hp nitrous kit...pick it up in a few weeks and drive home 9 grand poorer, buy hey you'll drive home really really fast!

Terms...
shortblock- sometimes called a 'built bottom end,' has a block (duh), aftermarket rods/pistons, crank, performance bearings, rings and an oil pump.

long block- has all of the above plus heads, valvetrain and oil pan. Probably head studs, too. Some packages may differ with different vendors, but that's generally how it works.

It's tough to recommend camshafts, everyone has their own idea of what's too hot for the street. Keep in mind, speed = $

my question is, is a Long block better than a built short block? If its the same thing but with heads.. why not. What kind of heads does it have? better than factory right. the reason i ask is because the price for each is about the same. how is that?

why not just have someone install it for you. Building the longblock is the easy part. Our guy's can build 2-3 motors a day.
You have to be pretty fast to install a motor and have it ready in one day, and not butcher the job. Just my 2 cents, for all i know you may be a mechanic.

Your looking at a "Stock" longblock and a "Built" shortblock so the extra price is in the internals of the shortblock.
