Unknown if that rumor is true. I do know that if you laid the various rods side by side you would be able to tell them apart. Supposedly the manufacturer changed after 2000 not the configuration of the rod. If true it sounds like either a bad run of rods for the 2001-up or the old shop built to the high end of the strength requirement and the new shop is building to the low side.

You will be fine with a 5# and a good tune.

I would also like to know more about the differences in the rods between the 99-00 and the 01 and up L's. Does anyone know who actually supplies the rods to Ford? By reading this board it has became clear that the 2001 L's rods were weak compared to all other years. Kind of makes you wonder!!!!

I had heard federal-mogul was the rod supplier. Maybe someone will chime in with a 100% definite answer.

I d/k about any rod differences but my 01 is at 47,200 miles--with a 5 lb pulley on for many 1/4 mile passes and 6 dynu pulls--driven daily.

differences

I believe the stock pistons are made by federa mogul.....not the rods.

I believe Sal had factual info that there was a vendor change after the 2000 production year. The rods weren't infact designed any different......

There is a guy on ls1.com [engine engr] that claims that the pistons for the L's and 03 cobras are made by KUS [Karl Shmidit unisia] and in fact are not made by Federal Mogul..just sold under there name,.

He further states that the 99-00 and 01-02 rods are made from the same supplier and design specs and that any evidence of the 01 up being weaker is unscientific at best.

He goes on to say that his boss needs scientific proof...which leads me to believe that maybe he is an engineer for the rod manufactuer.

When he says unscientific evidence, he is reffering to this board and others pecentage of 99-00 to 01 up rod failures.
