Anyone experienced this before???

Just recently my 2001 L has started making a vibration type noise between 2500 and 3000 rpms. It kind of sounds like pinging but it is not quite as loud and it does not go away even when I remove my JDM chip and add 2 cans of octane booster. I took it to the dealership and they told me that it's pinging slightly and that this is "normal". I told them that pinging is not "normal" and that this is not "pinging". Upon further inquiry the service tech said it might be a problem with some valve in the intake manifold switching over and vibrating, but again they said this is normal "such bull****" it sounds like crap and is certainly not normal. Has anyone ever had this problem here? Is there really a valve in the manifold, I was not aware of this.

Anyhow, stay away from Ford Country in Lewisville. These guys don't want to fix anything and they don't seem to know **** about what a normal engine sounds like.

I hope you have another Ford Dealer to check with ?
Good Luck, I hope it's something simple.

I freak out thinking about WHO is gonna touch my Baby if and when I have a problem. I will not de-mod it, so unfortunatly, I'll be on my own.

How is it running besides the noise ?
Does the vibration noise effect the way it normally feels ?
Does it ONLY do it @ 2500-3000 RPM ?

Could it be something a simple as bad gas ?
Does it do it in Neutral if you bring it up to that RPM ?

If it was pinging at that rpm range, throw it in OD to get above that range and see if it does the same thing.

Also, by vibrating do you mean surging? If so, check your TPS voltage...

I don't think it's bad gas because I have filled up at several different gas stations and even added as much as two cans of octane booster with no change. I am 90% sure it is not pinging. It sounds like something metal vibrating in air flow. It is not present over 3500 rpm. I have checked the air inlet, filter and throttle body. I noticed some oil on the throttle body inlet from the PCV but I am not sure if this is not normal (seemed like alot of oil).

Does anyone know if there is any type of valve or dynamic runner control in the lightning manifolds?

Cyntax,

No it is not surging. It seems to be running fine just making alot of noise.

Mine 01 did the same thing. I thought it was my new high flow cats so JDM looked it over when it was there for a custom tune and they said the heat exchanger was loose. They said they tightened it. I have no noise anymore so check that if you can or recomend your dealer to check that. Best of luck. -Mat-

Where is this heat exchanger? Are you talking about the intercooler?

The only 'valve'(other than the IAC valve--not involved at your rpm) in(attached to) the intake manifold is the EGR valve. Could it be broken/loose? It is supposed to be in operation at your rpm(not in use at idle or WOT). Have a tech check it out .

ATIDominator did you get your problem fixed. I think I have the same noise, only diference is that it happens when I drive 50 to 60 mph. I installed a pcv kit today the noise went away the first two times I went out, but on the third time it came back alittle louder than before. I did take it to the dealer, but at that time couldn't get the engine to make the noise, it did however on the way home.

thanks to all for any help

I am starting to wonder if it could be something with my exhaust. It definitely sounds like something metal vibrating in airflow. I think I might have to take it to another dealership with more competant mechanics.

You can try Bankston Ford in Frisco...at the corner of 121 and Dallas North Tollway. I know there have been some issues with their sales end of the dealership...I know, I used to work there, but they had a pretty good service department. Atleast it was good when I was there a year ago. Check them out first if you want.

Good luck

Has anyone figured this one out yet? I think I have the same problem. The noise only occurs between 2500 - 3000 rpm, and I can reproduce it if the truck is in park if I rev the engine or if it is in gear at whatever speed.

I did have my IAC valve replaced about 18 months ago. It was making a different noise then...

I am contemplating removing the IAC and spraying it out with carb cleaner and also replacing the PCV valve.

Mine is a 98 5.4 w/ 73k on it....
