Tranny Going Away.....

54000...

FT valve body in at 23000

with new deep pan and filter...

Mobil one...

Dropped the pan tonight and pulled the FT valve body...

The magnet had a nice 1/8 inch coat of fuzz..almost looked like a fiber washer...

The pan had a nice grease look to it..fine particulates....

Stuck in the factory valve body and a new filter.....

It started by not desiruing to shift outta first...unless letting off..

After driving about 20 minutes on the hiway..then coming to a stop it would make a clanging sound..almost a rattle..knock..then it would fight it's way into 2nd and run fine unless I stomped on it..then it would just redline......easing into it and it runs fine..as long as first is not used....

even after the pan was cleaned and the valve body changed...oh well...

how much for the monster box..?

Mine is doing the same thing. It's a 2000 with 13k miles, maybe 700 miles on the valve body. I had it at the track last week, on the 1-2 shift it hit the rev limiter, after that it kinda made a whisling sound that would stop when the truck stoped. After about 20 miles the sound stoped. The shifts are still firm but it will not shift 1-2 untill you let of the gas.

hey Shane what did it cost you to fix it.

thanks, Ray

I try to make a habit of hittin O/D off as soon as I start the truck.

Unless I'm getting on the highway. It keeps wear off the sprag. From what I understand its one of the weaker parts of the tranny.

That would have no effect on the sprag at all, the sprag is related to 2nd gear. The sprag isn't something that fails very much at all, really, it's the intermediate plates that go most of the time.

Ok, I'm a Field Service Tech for Detroit Diesel. I asked one of our Allison techs on any advice to owning an auto. One of them who had an 01 modded powerstroke told me to hit O/D off.

Because of some reason or another I coulda sworn he mentioned something about the sprag..it coulda been the intermediate clutches.... it made sense at the time.

Does that have any effect on the intermediate clutches then?

Don't worry I plan on ordering a FTVB

It's just bad advice, there is no good reason for turning off the OD except that if it does what is best for the tranny it gets kind of annoying sometimes in hells, etc... When it "hunts" for a gear, it's looking to do what is best for gas mileage mostly, but it doens't hurt the tranny at all. They put the switch there because it can drive you nuts, not because it was good for the box. If it was up to me, the switch would be behind a plate under the hood, welded shut with a mis-treated wolverine gaurding it. They finally did away with the useless thing in the 5 speed this year.

A lot of people who "know" give some pretty bad advice, some guy on another board was telling how all 4R100s have 2 bands that have been upgraded and his shop had him get a rebuild to ureplace them....but the 4R100 only has one band, it only works to engage M2 and its the same one they've had since 1989....jeesh, and this guy had his box rebuilt for this

Stop talking about trannies going out. =) I can't afford to get mine rebuilt... and all this talk will jinx me! *stops reading this post* ...

Mine shifts stronger then ever with the new valve body. Hopefully it'll 'increase' the life.... hopefully

I took off my superchip recently to avoid any problems as far as wearing out the pump. (the chip had increased line pressure) I had gotten sick of it banging the gears so hard all the time, it would only shift soft under super light throttle. Now that the chip is off I noticed that between 3rd and 4th it sometimes hesitates and then slams into 4th too hard. It does shift nice and soft under WOT but I dont understand why its so harsh going into 4th when Im already going 65+ mph just cruising..it doesnt always do it..seems to do it more when I let off the gas for a second

anybody have a clue if thats normal? I dont remember it doing that before the chip.... the chip by the way was on for about 20k miles
