Just my luck...engine caught on fire
I was running some errands around town today and I got in my truck, started it up, and a wierd whining noise sounded like it was coming from the front of the truck. I thought maybe it was the fuel pump and I was just "thinking" it was coming from the front of the truck. So I drove a couple miles down the road. The whining seemed to go away the higher the RPMs went up. But I started to get real worried, so I pulled the truck over into a parts store parking lot and pop the hood. Can hear the noise clearly on the passenger side of the engine. I try to detect it more by giving it a little gas. All the sudden I hear a loud pop! Didnt see anything fly by but the engine started to get a little rough so I shut it off. I look back at the passenger side and see smoke coming from somewhere under neith. I go back in my truck to call someone to come get me and a couple minutes later I look again and I see flames coming from something underneith or to the side of the passenger side (couldnt see anything cause the valve cover and inner fenderwell blocked too much.) So i go inside the part store to get a extinguisher and put it out. By that time I attracted a nice little crowd...was embarrasing having my Lightning on fire.
So I got it towed to a local dealer. Have to wait till tomorrow to figure out what it was. I looked to see if it was a sparkplug but all my coils seemed to be in place...so I'm dumbfounded. A 2001 with 12000 miles and no mods that catches on fire...thats just great! As if I wasnt worried enough about blown spark plugs, leaking head gaskets, or broken rods...those 03's are looking real nice now...

After Market Fuel Gauge
Do you have an Aftermarket fuel psi guage if so I bet the fitting for the shrader valve conversion got loose and leaked fuel on the exhaust manifold...if not the fuel lines are in that area on the fire wall
Good luck hope your truck is ok fire is not good

My dad's 1977 MG Midget Convertible (british made car) caught on fire once on the highway and he luckily got a truck driver to stop and borrow his fire extinguisher to put it out. He was freaking out about it he said. He loves that car.
Damn sorry to hear that, I was thinking of gettin a fire extinguisher the other day, I never would expect something like this to happen but just in case.

I once had a fire under my truck. The story goes like this: I'm cruising down the freeway in Corpus Christi, Texas when from out of nowhere, I see this huge sheet of cardboard coming towards me after ricocheting off another car. I try to swerve; but I end up running over it. I hear it go under the truck and see it fly out the back. I think nothing of it. So the next day, I'm heading back to Austin when I'm convinced someone must be bar-b-queing on the freeway. I continue to smell burning wood. This goes on for a couple of miles; so I decide to pull over at a gas station to see if something's going on under the hood. As soon as I get out of the truck, I can see light flickering at my feet. I kneel down and see flames!
This guy pumping his gas yells at me to get away from the gas station and also tells me that there's a refinery fire department on the next freeway exit. I haul a$$ onto the freeway and take the next exit and sure enough, there it is. By the time I'm stopped, 4 firemen are already outside with a couple of extinguishers. They tell me they could see the flames under the truck as I was coming down the exit ramp. Apparently, they were playing ball or something out front. Anyway, a piece of the cardboard got stuck on one of the cats and eventually caught fire. I was surprised by what a big chunk of the stuff was actally still under my truck.

I witnessed something odd when a buddy of mine and I were at Bankston Ford in Frisco, TX. We were looking at a new red 01 and when we started it up the needles on the gauges pegged which I knew ment the computer reset. He started the truck and white smoke started coming out from the hood. We shut it off and looked under the hood and saw nothing out of the ordinary. I get back in and start it again with the hood up and once again the gauges pegged which was odd. There was smoking coming out of the passenger side of the engine. Needless to say we left that place. That truck had some freakin issues!!! It was brand new too! I feel sorry for the poor SOB that got that one!
WOW....
If you were new to this board I would have assumed you were another troll looking to stir up trouble but you're not...
Guess Ford's QC takes another hit
Sorry about your troubles and hopefully everything will be alright.

That really sucks, hopefully ford can figure out what the problem was. When my truck was on fire and the fire dept was on their way I almost cried at the thought that they were going to spray my truck down. Luckily the fire went out before they got there...
