Salvage Title

I was looking on Autotrader.com, and there's a 1999 L w/ 36k mi, in dash TV, 6 disc DVD changer, and Borla cat-back exhaust.

The only bad thing is that it's got a salvage title. I called the owner, and he said it was hit in the box and a little on the passenger side of the cab. He bought it from a dealer after everything had been fixed. The pics look great. He's asking $17500, but he has to sell soon, so maybe I could get him down to $16000 or something.

Here's the link: http://www.autotrader.com/findacar/v...SL&color=BLACK

Has anyone had a good or bad experience w/ a salvage titled vehicle? He said he had a salvage Integra that got stolen, and his ins company paid him as if it wasn't a salvage. I have my ins co. looking into it for me.

Any help would be great.

Thanks a bunch.

Yeah, he said they're 305's instead of 295's. I thought they looked funny, but he said the dealership put them on.

I have to agree with Ayrton...In order for the truck to have a salvage title, it must have been damaged bad enough so that the cost to fix it was more than the truck is worth....

The vehicle had been totaled in a previous life ... Not exactly
small damage to the bed and fender IMHO ...

I have seen several cars with salvage titles that are perfectly repairable, but a 99 Lightning with a clean title can be bought in the high teens.

A rule of thumb for salvage titles is 50%, so whatever the vehicle is worth "clean", then deduct half for a bum title.

My brother had an old Jeep Wrangler that was a salvage title. It was always a great Jeep, but I think it was salvage because it had been stolen and had everything taken off of it. I think the people that we bought it from had put all new seats and a bunch more stuff in it. I would be leary if it had been wrecked to the point of salvage. Make him an offer like the poster above said. 50% sounds about right.

If the truck checks out soundly, and the repair is done correctly, then I would offer around 10k, but no where near 16k.

Don’t quote me on the percentage but I think they salvage a vehicle at like 80% of the vehicles worth. This was explained to me by a body shop in case when they are working on it and more damage is found the amount could be over 100% of the vehicles worth and be a waste of time. I owned a 94 L with a salvage title and had no problems at all with it. There’s nothing wrong with a car that’s been fixed as long as it done right. You just have to go over it with a fine toothcomb and know what you’re looking at.
