Figure the truck was 30k new and its roughly 80-85% to total a new veichle. Fixed or not that had to have been a fairly bad hit. I would say possible frame engine cab or all 3 replaced. The truck alone with 36k for a 99 cant be worth anymore then 20 k with a clean title. With a salvcage title its probably 10 12 grand. Also if you were to ever trade this into a dealer later on they would laugh at you. In my opinion I wouls stear clear of this. Plus those tires are god awful ugly.

The thing that makes me somewhat for this deal is that when the truck was in the accident and the ins. co. did their calculation, they may have been basing it on a regular F-150 because there are a lot of ins. co's. that don't recognize the difference between a regular F-150 and a lightning. If they figured the truck was worth $16k, they figured $11k+ in damages. That may have only been 40% of the real value of the truck. If a vehicle sustains 40% of its value in damages, it's not considered a total loss.

I'm gonna' have the guy send more pics of the truck. Thanks a lot for your comments. I was thinking of offering the guy $14k for the truck because I have to go from WI to NJ to get it, too, and he's pretty desparate for a sale.

Thumbs down salvaged titles

Do Not Buy this Truck at that price.....read it again!!!!!

First of all, a 99, even with that low miles can be bought for far less with a salvaged title. The sad part is some sucka will buy it.

Where the probem lies is you can check it out and have it checked by a mechanic and the vehicle can be fine, but if you ever try to sell it or trade it in, you'll have to pay someone to take it.

Trust me, i learned the hard way. Bought a bronco with a salvaged title, wrecked on a pole, new bumber, grill hood and fender.........no frame damage at all , but was salvaged. Thing was immaculant. Well, traded it in on my explorer, after everything was signed sealed and delivered, the dealer called me trying to back out of the deal because they had just realized that my truck had a salvaged title......after it went through he salesman, finance manager and then the sales manager's hands, who finally thought it was a problem. Needless to say the situation was a nightmare, but was quickly solved when my lawyer made a few phone calls.

If you can get a real good price on it and plan on keeping it for a while, may be what you are looking for, but if you plan on buying it and turning it in a few years, be prepared to get zippo for it. Good luck

WHat's with the monster truck tires? The width of the tire the guy told u about has nothing to do with the heigh of the tire (profile).

I agree with everyone else..sucks to be the poor guy that got hit and now his truck is worthless...but I would stay away from this "deal" if I were you.

I think there are some legal issues if you ever get into an accident , somebody is hurt, and you are driving a salvage title vehicle. Even if it has been determined "clean"

I agree with tallimeca, if your going to keep it it’s not an issue but be prepared to get hardly nothing out of it when you sell.

In some states, the vehicle has to be "re-certified" as road worthy.

One other thing to consider as well.
Not sure if you were getting a loan on it or not, but from what I have heard, it is very hard to get a loan from a bank on a salvage vehicle.
Even if you get one, just think about the next guy who has a loan approved to purchase it from you, only to be turned down because of the title status...

Just throwing that out there for you.

Correct, I know of no bank that will loan on a salvage title.

I know alot about salvage vehicles.I do NOT sell them though for many reasons.

Plain and simple,You are not gonna find even a salvage lightnings for 10-12 grand .The old rule of thumb is,Your truck is worth 50% of what it would be not salvage. With everything changing in the auto business,That it not the case at all anymore. These salvage vehicles do outragous $$ at auction for whatever reasons and are usually sold only a few thousand less than regular prices in my area.Id say the truck is worth $14-15k retail salvage if it is basically perfect.YES,Dealers who DO NOT sell salvage vehicles run scared from them but there are dealers willing to pay for whatever reasons .If you plan on keeping the truck dont be so scared just do your homework on the truck.its a way to save a few thousand if money is tight.remember,Even salvage, these trucks are high performance and will hold decent value until they get about 7-8 years old salvage. Then you will see them drop a little more.

Well yes, as dealers look for additional income in these hard times, some dealers will buy salvage units, and then "wash" the title in order to retail the car, but I would'nt pay anything ending in "teen" for a salvage 99 Lightning.

Um,There is no such thing as "washing" a title or odometer fraud these days.........States have very tough guidlines on repairables which is probally the reason these salvage cars are bringing as much $ as they are.In my state,You MUST fix EVERY thing that is on the insurance companies repair estimate.Sometimes, you are replacing parts that are not even hurt do to insurance companies not being able to check each item they think needs replacing. This happens alot on front end parts and panels behind fenders and such that you cannot see until apart. You need to bring the vehicle up to the state capitol where an inspector CLOSLY goes over the car.it must be "back to manurfacturors specs"FYI
