Question no brake lights

I noticed last night that my brake lights were not working. Only the third brake light would illuminate.

It wouldn't shift out of park either. By unplugging the stop light switch I could get the truck shifted out of park, and then when I plugged the stop light switch back in my brake lights would work. But if I turned the truck off the whole unplug, shift, plug back in process would have to be repeated.

This morning the brake lights didn't work at all no matter how many times I messed with the stop light switch so I replaced the switch. Although it will now shift out of park without any problems, still no brake lights.

Fuses are good and the stop light switch is new. Blinkers and hazards work fine.

Any ideas of what else I could check on my own before I have to take it in to Ford

If the 3rd brake light works when the rear ones dont, I usually ****** and wiggle the turn signal lever pretty hard while holding the brake. If you see some flicker back there, replce the multifunction switch. The multifunction switch actually interrupts the rear brake light signal when hazads are on or a turn signal is on on one side. The 3rd brake lamp is never passed through the multifunction switch.

Did you make sure all the fuses are good. I have seen the speed control cancellation switch on the master cylinder leak and cause the wiring harness to melt there thus popping the fuse. check that switch on the master cylinder by pulling the connector off and checking for moisture melting or burning of the plastic on the switch and connector or brake fluid in it. If so replace the switch. and make sure that fuse is not open. They may look good, but check it with a test light. check 5 amp fuse #15 and 20amp fuse #13 for opens. If all those checks are correct suspect the multifunction switch (13k359 basic part #)

You guys are bad a$$!

I had the wife stand out back while I wiggled the blinker and nothing, but when I raised and lowered the steering wheel..tada!

Somethings loose in there and when the steering wheel is tilted down it must be breaking a connection.

Thanks

Theres a $70 harness in there that has the terminals pulled out of the hard connector where it goes into the m-f switch. I put about one on a month at work, where someone has carelessly replaced a m-f switch and snatched the connector too hard.

Man, I just got this same problem with the brake lights. Yep multifunction switch was loose. Had problems with the harness on the top of the steering column coming loose a couple of months back. caused my turn signals not to work. I had to adjust the steering wheel up and down until they came on. Thanks to all the guys on this site that provide and share this useful information. This site has been extremely helpful to me.
