Talking First Autocross!!

I had my first autocross yesterday. What a blast!!

I started out conservative, maybe a little too conservative, but improved my times dramatically. We had 4 runs plus 2 "Instructional" practice runs at the end. I was able to knock off 2 1/2 seconds in one of my practice runs from my best 'official' time. I haven't seen the official results, but my best time from practice would have put me a lot further up.

The best part of the entire day was the reactions I got from both spectators and other drivers. I guess they are not used to full size pick-ups autocrossing, much less light the tires up from a 30mph roll. I was fighting for traction when I accelerated, but I didn't realize until after a couple of runs (my wife told me!) that my tires weren't only squealing, but also billowing out a ton of white smoke. I think that got everyone excited and even had the peanut gallery cheering. Everyone who came up to me was impressed (with the truck, probably not my driving) so I do think I won some cool points. Isn't that what it's all about anyway?

I have some pics in my gallery:

looks almost like the back driver's tire is about to lose contact with the road - COOL!

Hah same thing happened to me, I didn't realize it but apparently there was smoke pouring off my tires my first time as well. Everyone loved it and I didn't do that bad either.

My truck is still bone stock! The FS catch-all for v-8 pick-ups was what the guys here (or NLOC) said they were running when they were stock. I'm eyeing the complete Hotchkis set-up and QA-1's pretty hard (I drool everytime Tim Skelton posts pictures of his truck) so ESP may not be far off!!

Thanks for all the pics. I can't wait to do it again!!

Autocrossing is more fun for me than drag racing, and it lasts longer... only issue with racing the truck is the cost of tires to run competitively in E street prepared versus prepped Fox body stangs. So I run my Miata for autocrossing a,d the truck for daily plus the occasional quarter mile. Lots cheaper that way, and I am pretty much owning out local C stock class for this year's first 3 events. I just run the truck on practice days for a couple runs, its a hoot power drifting it...

Though I did want my L this weekend when an R/T was the sole entry in truck class... woulda ate his lunch...

oh well.
Windows down in SCCA and hands inside at all times ...
Every co-driver I ever saw on the first run had to grab the roof!!!

Windows down so they can get you OUT when you're
upside down!!!

I guess in drags, they figure you're dead already ...

One SCCA rule I would like to see enforced at the strip
is the floormats out when racing ... seems sooooo simple
but it causes a bunch of jammed throttles ...

Phillip .. you can still put a ROUSH kit on it ....
