how much does helicoiling cost?

how much would a job like that be? do you know of any shops that are reputable in this? i'm getting a little paranoid with all these plug issues and was just wondering what it would cost for a good night's sleep

To do it correctly the heads have to come off. Most machine shops should be able to handle the install of the inserts. Pretty simple process once the heads are off. Drill out the hole, re-tap it, install the insert.

Sad to say it but i've had my L stored up since the start of winter. With all these plug catastrophies i'm not driving it until I decide to take it to a dealer to get em checked. Just reading all these post about "plugs gone wild" really upsets my stomach.. I know d@mn well I can't afford to have something like that happen to me right now.. Never thought It would come to feeling like it's a gamble to drive my truck... The main reason I bought my L besides how fast it is, was its uniqueness...

If you are going to pull the heads why throw good money after bad. Get the new heads with 8 threads!

You want to be sure? Get the proper wrenches and check them all yourself. Several have launched after have a FOrd Dealer change them out. You will never know unless you do it yourself!

Posted this back in March of 2000:
Best move you will ever make with your "L". Every new car I have ever purchased had the wrong plug gaps, and timing. First thing I did was check the plugs and 6 out of 8 were wrong, two were loose, and one was closed completely as if it had been dropped or something. Pull'em, gap'em, and return them back into the same hole you got them out of. You won't be sorry you did, and the time is worth just knowing what they were set on. I call it "knowledge" some call it peace of mind.

I paid $150 at a machine shop. That also included removing the valves and grinding on a couple of them. I don't know what the going price is, but it sounded okay to me. Especially after I already had the heads ported and fitted to the new valves.

Nope....it's about $150 including parts and labor for heli-coils.

The labor to pull the heads and re-install will be in the $750-800 range.
