get BRONZE valve guides installed no matter what. You will thank me later, especially if you decide to run long tubes
I'm just curious, what do bronze valve guides have to do with long tube headers? and how can they affect each other?
Ok..
Take the heads off your truck or mustang for that matter.
Go get your motor built.
Figure say, a 4 week down time.
Slap it back together and discover a few weeks later the oil consuption problem.. The vacuum will pull the oil from your dried, crusty stock valve guides and introduce it into your combustion chamber without permission.

are you saying that the valve guides deteriorate with long tubes, or with high boost?
I'm just trying to understand what you are saying. it sounds like that you are saying your valve guides went bad after 4 weeks?
it doesn't make much sense. I don't understand what would cause that. I can't believe the cylinder head person didn't check the stock guides, and what about your valve seals? the vacuum would have to pull through them, the guides don't seal oil, the valve seals do. I understand that if the guides are worn out or broken, then the seals can't properly do their job, I'm just trying to understand what you are saying, because I'm contemplating doing some heads myself.

Thats exactly what im saying.
For anyone using 4V heads, it will even detoriate faster.
I dont know why Ford has been cheesing out on the quality of their valvetrain but its a very common problem in the mod motor community. Personally i havent had this prob on my lightning since i havent ripped this motor down and have no long tubes installed. There is no build difference between the 4.6 and 5.4.. So this can be a common problem for those with heads just laying around for weeks to months awaiting a new motor.
If youre going to build a motor, just do it right and add the valve guides.
