Unhappy Head gasket shot

My 02 with 20K miles needs a new head gasket on passenger side. I smelled burning oil but could not locate the problem--my dealer did. Covered by warrantly, but I was wondering how many others have had this trouble.

By the way-- takes 4-5 days to fix

Thanks for any input.

I know how you feel, my truck was in the shop 3 weeks ago for the same thing, 12K miles, this is a common problem on all 5.4 engines, ford has an updated head gasket that they now use.
(its thicker).

Larry.

A friend who used to be a Ford service manager said they started taking the cab off the trucks as a quicker way to change the gaskets or heads. Unfortunately,a common problem.

Might be a good idea to have the decks checked for flatness...

I took mine in for the gasket leak on the passenger side head..rear corner...new gaskets..then two cylinders ate the plugs and rings just after I got it out of the shop..blueovalnews.com
has a post about Ford hallting production for a while on the 4.6 and 5.4 because of warped blocks. Double check part numbers and etc. to cover your butt.

Mine was leaking at 29,000mi. But I, got lucky it blow out a spark plug on that bank before it got in for the leak. Had both done at the same time! put 21,000mi since and no trouble. Artie

Thanks for comments

While I love the truck, this is the second major event.

Within first week of ownership, an engine pulley simply fell off and ripped up belts, etc. Bolts on ground. Luckily it happened on my driveway at idle and not at speed.

Good thing for warranty. Hope all goes wrong before 36,000 miles.
