Ford's After Warranty Award Program

The AWA
Every new Ford owner is provided two invocations of an After Warranty Adjustment (AWA). The two AWA invocations can be used within the first 5 years or 75000 miles of the vehicles lifetime. There are no restrictions from Ford about how the AWAs can be applied - however, dealerships are frequently audited on their use of AWAs.

When an AWA is invoked the dealer typically pays 10%, the customer pays 10% and Ford pays the remaining 80% of the costs. However, the 20% is negotiable between the dealer and customer.

Found this around..anyone have experience with this?

First of all, AWA stands for After Warrany Adjustment. Like you wrote, the program has no restrictions except for mileage and the age of the car. However, granting of an AWA is completely at the discretion of the dealer. Most times, dealer may offer an AWA to a customer whose vehicle need service just out of warranty if the vehicle had been purchased and/or was routinely serviced at the dealership. Don't expect to take your modded L with a grenaded block into a dealership and expect them to give you an AWA. It won't happen.

I have experienced this warranty deal before they recalled the I/C leak. I was out of warranty (41,836 miles) and had to have the I/C replaced by looking at the TSB that was out on it and they said that there was a hidden warranty thing that if you were under 75K miles that ford would pay 80% of the repairs and I had to pay 20%. So I went ahead and did that and ended up paying around $240+ for the fix. After the recall program took place they sent me a refund check for the 20% that I had to pay before. But the service manage told me that this special warranty thing was only good from 36K to 50K miles. Let me know if it is really up to 75K miles cause I have the door crack and have 74,743 mile on my truck.

i have used my 2 awa on my 99L. first was the a/c compressor and then the intercooler was never upgraded and the original did leak and they replaced it. ford payed 80% and the dealer i guess picked up the rest they never asked me for the 10% when i picked it up i might still get a bill on it but a small price to pay for an intercooler. just hope its ok from here on out.

AWA may be coming to an end as Ford is charging back to dealers more and more charges in an effort to save money.

Bultaco -
I thought the intercooler was fully covered because it was part of a recall... ?

There was never a recall on the intercoolers.

The intercooler recall had a time limit. But as I recall, the end was something like Sept of 01 I think. With such a low number of vehicles produced, you'd think almost all of them would have had the recall done with a 2-3 year span. It's surprising to hear people still needing that recall after all this time.

September 22, 2002 was the cut off date for this "Owner Notification Program" for the intercoolers. This probably only applies to 00's but it is still covered under any remaining 3/36 warranty.

My year 2000 got a recall notice mailed in a shipping tube with a Lightning cold drink 'cuzie' (sp). I got the intercooler changed in an afternoon, but my son stole the cozie.

Technically, it wasn't a full blown "recall." Recalls are usually safety related and have to registered with (if not already prompted by) the NTSB. The intercooler replacement for 99 and 00's was an "Owner Notification Program" done voluntarily by Ford.
